Obviously, a pyrometer....after that it's a toss-up. Lots put on tranny temp. Some also the boost gauge. I opted for the oil temp, trans temp and pyro. Check out the Chemeleon gauge system by Stewart Warner @ one of our sponsers, Discount Power Parts. I have a video in there of the set I installed....you can change the lighting colors to whatever color you want.
to prevent the turbo from failing from temp related failure. i bought a pyrometer from auto meter and bought the cool down timer from BD diesel i hooked all the gauges up after work during a three day span they are all in now and i started the truck everything works but i have yet to see if the cool down timer is working as the egt temps have to be above a set temp for it to keep the engine running. the reason i went with the BD product is with any other timer it goes by highest rpms to determine idle time. which may be unecessary. and you can adjust the temp at which the engine shuts down. but i put trans temp, egt temp, boost but what you put in is a personal preference. but absolutely necessary imho is the egt gauge at bare minimum. but a little advice. buy a quality tap before attempting install you'll thank me later.
I'm going to be using my 04 PSD as a TV. Am I right in assuming an EGT temp and Pyro are the guages I would need? I thought I read somewhere that the stock trans temp gauge was a POS. So EGT/Pyro/Trans temp would be a good group?
it depends on what you wanna monitor. its up to you. personally like i said i would go with egt, trans temp, boost two are already included in my stock dash cluster but you have no idea exactly what temp the trans is at. if you buy a egt gauge then you should go ahead and buy the cool down timer from BD it's an extra 129 but well worth it to save the turbo. total i spent about 450 for all the gauges, cool down timer and a-piller but i went with autometer and the ultralite 2's which is one of the better gauges they sell. you can get it for cheaper i'm sure. good luck
Ok, here is another question. Like chili7 has stated, I have to question the accuracy of the stock tranny gauge, and have been contemplating adding a separate one. The needle on my stock gauge reaches the center of the sweep area, and stay's there, regardless of tranny workload. Anyone know where the stock sender is? Same with the water temp gauge. Never moves after it reachs normal operating temps.....
As for the EGT/Pyro. I am guessing the pre-turbo EGT is the preferred temp to monitor vs. the post turbo temps. How or where is everyone mounting the sender for the pyro. Also, is fuel pressure a necessary monitor item? What is the range of fuel pressure on the 6.0 and what range for the boost gauge.
I like my Isspro pyrometer, trans temp and boost pillar guage set. In addition I use the Scanguage which plugs into the OBD II port and can moniter 14 different parameters in real time such as voltage, coolant temp and mpg but only 4 display at a time. I tow a 6000* travel trailer and have seen coolant temps up to 220, trans temp to 210 and EGT to 1100. It's nice to know when to back off the throttle a little to get the temps down. My EGR has been unplugged and I've had no problems with the truck, now have 31k.
I use a Bully Dog monitor. Even thou it can check a lot of stuff I leave it on the boost, 2 egt's and volts...Easy to read and it can rest codes on the fly...The ones I have reset were all soratic...Good Luck
