Hi i have a 55 f-100 with a 272 2 barrell it keeps stalling at idle if i keep the choke 1/2 open it will run but high rpm, can't seem to ajust to low idle, motor runs rough just got the truck and am starting to restore it. Title says it is a 1954 but frame no# read f10v5u17071 1 think it is a 55 any help would be great Thanks in advance.
It could be a number of things or a combination but usually if it won't idle the carburetor has to be suspect. I assume you have tried to set the idle mixture screw(s) but if not, try adjusting it. The fact that it runs better with the choke closed means it might be getting too much air in the mixture.
I had the what sounds like the same problem with my F-2 after I rebuilt the carb. I talked to a guy who does more work on engine than I do and he told me to check the "idle return", I think that's what he called it. On my truck it's the inverted "V" that runs through the center of the of the carb. I overlooked it when I rebuilt the carb, sure enough it was clogged with a bunch of gunk. I cleaned it out the truck runs fine. It's worth a look.
I've had this prob on my 68 last year. To see if it is a air mix problem, I would manually adjust the idle up some. If that fixes it then I would say it's not because of a vacuum leak. In the carb there is a port where the idle circuit gets its fuel. It runs vertically and ends just below the two adjustment screws on the back of the carb. (I'm assuming that you have the same Holley carb as I do on my 55 272) Those adjustment screws are for the idle mixture. With the engine warmed up and idleing, you turn one in until the rpms drop. Then back it out 1/4 turn. Then repeat the procedure on the other screw. If there is no change to the rpm then I'm guessing the idle circuit is plugged. Good luck and get back to us with the results. Other FTE members will benefit from your experience. Jag
Try spraying carb cleaner at the base of the carb and around the vacuum lines. If/when the idle changes, note where you sparayed and check for a vacuum leak there. It sounds like your carb could probably use a rebuild also.
