Which engine do I have?

I just bought a '92 F350 diesel from a Ford dealer in Illinois and haven't got the truck delivered yet. It was listed as having 235 HP. Would this be a 7.3 or the 6.9? and is it turbo charged? It's only got 44,000 miles - so I'm hoping it'll be decent.

Here's a link to my Gallery album if you're courious.

it will be a 7.3 from the factory, however, there have been changes by previous owners or dealers back to the 6.9 as replacement engines ... dont know why. As far as the turbo, the person you bought it from should tell you that .. pretty obvious. If it is a 92 it will be an aftermarket turbo system of which there are several makes. Try to get hold of any maintainance records for it.

Chances are it is a 7.3l that was fitted with an aftermarket turbo system and had the fuel turned up.

Ford did not sell the turbo engines till 93' and these were only listed at 190 hp so the truck you bought had some tweaking (fuel turned up, possibley an intercooler) done on it to get it to 235 hp.

Seb.....

Either that or the dealer lied, whether it be intentionally or unintentionally, as some dealers have no idea what they are talking about. Someone may have told them it had that much, or they guesed, maybe thinking it was a Stroke?

235 was the stock HP of the first generation Power Stroke motors.
That is rather easy to get out of an IDI with the proper turbo, fuel adjustments and exhaust upgrades.

sometimes, the inherent ability of the dealers to be stupid and tell untruths, the real identification of the engines is not correct until you go look at it and compare black and white information.
Some dealers think that just because there is a turbo, it is a powerstroke.
The power stroke can be installed into older chassis, but the work and money involved is unjustifiable for dealers to do it and get their money back.

go look at the engine and if you see individual fuel lines running to the cylinders, you have a 6.9 or a 7.3. The 7.3 will have strengthening ribs on the lower head bolts just above the exhaust manifold.
If it is a 92 model year, the turbo is most likely an aftermarket system OR someone took a system off a late 93 factory turbo truck. The factory systems had a 2 1/2 exhaust coming from the turbo where aftermarket systems used a 3 inch downpipe.

bterry,
Come on back and ask lots of questions, that is how you learn something new.

This is a picture of a 7.3 IDI turbo engine front top.

The circle around the tach wire connector is right below the IP (silver in color). If you see the IP it is an IDI diesel.

Thanks for the info everyone. My son is going to Chicago Monday night to get it. He'll be back late Tuesday. Rest assured I'll check it out Wednesday - can hardly wait. I'll let you all know for sure. The thing that's got me confused is the 235 HP on a '92. Further, this was a municipally owned truck so I doubt thay added a turbo. I think the salesman is just full of it. That's OK, unless the thing is a complete dog, it should be a good one.
