Just pay the 90$ or so and get the high end one dont go cheap on this one itll get u good thats what i have learned, also check the coil right above it. But if you do hear of a way to move it let me know.
Also a heads up for people that dont know getting the codes after the vehicle has cooled is useless so is having it towed.
Has anyone moved the TFI module from a Distributor to a cooler location?
Has anyone heard of a kit to move one?
Would like to do this on a 1988 302.
Apparently, Ford thought this was a "Better Idea" in 1992. The TFI is mounted on a massive heat sink over on the fender well right below the left hinge on the hood. Dunno if a '92 dizzy would work in the 88 engine, but that might be an idea. Of course, there may be some wiring mods as well.
I have an 86 Bird that has it mounted on the dizzy too, and have lost one there because of radiator heat. (This was prior to replacing a plugged up radiator which was causing some pretty dangerous overheating.) Put a 3 pass rad in, and dropped temp to 190 on the tstat, and now the Bird runs cool as a cucumber, but within limits of the EEC-IV.
Have a look at a 92 or later, and see where the TFI and harness runs. Original harness on 88 may be long enuff to get from TFI to ECM, but dunno what to do between TFI and dizzy pickup.
I moved my coil and bracket to the fender, just behind the battery. I just extended the harness, and the coil wire (Ford Racing) was plenty long enough to reach.
