I just got back from a very hot trip of about 240 miles during which I was pulling a trailer who's weight I would guess was between 4000-6000 lbs. There was also a lot of air resistance on this trailer as it is in the shape of a box and quite a bit higher than the truck. I never used overdrive during the trip. As I got off the X-way and on city streets at the end of the trip I noticed the engine rpm really winding up on shifts between first and second gear, like the tranny was slipping. After parking the trailer and letting the rig cool down this problem seems to have disappeared.
Can this problem be attributed to very hot transmission fluid, or did I do some permanent damage?
Thats exactly what happened. When the transmission fluid gets to hot it begins to break down and looses its lubercation. As far as any permenate damage? I would check out the transmission dipstick and see what color the fluid is. If it is a dark brown then you sould have the fluid changed but if it still pretty clear then you sould be just fine.
Should be fine with a tranny fluid change. I would suggest on a future trip pulling that much weight to drive with o/d off and don't exceed about 65mph.

I pulled a trailer Monday (about 3K worth) and last night as I pulled onto my street I noticed the engine rev a bit like the tranny was slipping. Went to work today and then to run some errands. Tranny started slipping BAD. Got off the freeway and when the light turned green I had nothing . . . ran it up to 5500rpm and it wouldn't move. I put it in first and it started rolling but 2nd and drive gave me nothing. So I limped it up to the dealership in 1st but they couldn't do anything with it tonight. We'll see what they tell me tomorrow but he seemed to think that it would need a complete tranny overhaul.
I would have your truck towed to a transmission specialist. Some shops will can replace parts of your tranny for much less then just installing a new one. Also dealerships are very expensive, so unless it is warranty work, I would go to another mechanic. If it does turn out that a new tranny is needed I would recommend a Jasper Transmission. They are much stronger than a stock transmission and come with a 75,000 mile warrenty.
