C6 Case

I broke an ear off the bellhousing when I was trying to install my rebuilt engine, but the internals are fine. Does it matter which tailshaft design(slip-in or bolt in) you have for getting a replacement case? Also, decided that since it's gonna be out of the truck, I oughta rebuild it right with an extra clutch pack and better 2nd gear band...all the good stuff, ya know. Which kits are worth a crap and does it take a degree in rocket surgery to do it? I've already installed a shift kit with no problems in this C6, so I'm not totally in the dark, but didn't get farther than replacing the 2nd gear band(broken, reason for opening it up) and the valve body modifications.

I would stick with the same style as you have now. Whatever maker of rebuild kit you get make sure you get the deluxe or master kit. This should have all the seals, bands, clutch disks, steel disks, bearings, filter, gaskets. Some even have springs and accumulators and what have you. Make sure you work in a clean and I mean CLEAN environment. NEVER use rags to wipe off any part, always use compressed air and blow off everything. There aren't any really special tools needed to rebuild a C6 other than a dial indicator to check for the proper amount of end play.

Tha tail shaft does not matter as long as one uses the correct output shaft that matches the tail shaft.

There is how ever a change in the case design but I do not recall waht year this change took place. The modulator presses in on the older version and the new one bolts in or scews in.

Without seeing a picture of the extent of the damage, I can't even say for sure if I'd change the case.
I've ran broken cases with 5 bolts holding before without any problems. The dowl pins are the main thing to be concerened with.

The dowel pin on the driver side is part of the broken section...and it broke maybe 4 inches along the circle. With the engine's torque ratings, I don't think I want to chance it, 'specially hauling and/or towing like I occasionally do, mostly low speed forest service roads where the tranny creates alot of heat too.
