Before you start replacing random parts under the hood, pull your codes. The CEL is trying to tell you what's wrong, and you're not listening.

Well I am waiting on a code reader from Illinois, but it won't be here till this weekend & i'm getting antsy. I used to be able to trouble shoot the old non electronic atomobiles but these dang new fangled contraptions have me stumped! And all these so called mechanics around here keep telling me I need a tranny! One says it sounds like the pump, another says it's my governor, another says it's the clutch pack! But when I pull the plug from the OSS it'll bang through the gears in nothing flat but the TC won't unlock like that.

You don't need a codereader. All you need is a paperclip.

See www.fordfuelinjection.com and click on pulling codes (right side).

Well I finally got the code reader & the only code retrieved is "327" which according to my book states that the EGR valve position circuit is below minimum voltage. So how would I go about fixing that?

Check all your vacuum lines, particularly the ones between the vac reservoir and the EVP control solenoid. Make sure the wiring harness is fully seated at the EVP/EGR valve. You can also take off the EVP and check the resistance of it through its ranges. The Haynes manual has the resistance values and pins to test on the EVP (sits on top of the EGR, which is the valve coming off the passenger side exhaust manifold and hooked also to the side of the throttle body. There should be 3 nuts holding the EVP down to the EGR.

Thanks Jason, I checked the voltage at the plug & it's 4.98 volts which is just below the specs. of 5v according to Hanes. Now since I don't have a vacumn pump I'm not able to check the ohms through it's operating range?... I'm finding it hard to believe that this would have anything to do with my shift problem though?

You don't need a vacuum pump to check it. Just take it off and push the plunger with your finger--it helps to have either alligator clips on your ohmmeter or an assistant. The ohms don't have to be dead on, just in the ballpark of what the Haynes says.

New Question

Still haven't got the EGR figured out yet but I've got another question? If the transfer shifter is in neutral, will the truck still pull in gear? This one does?!.. It seems I remember an old Ram charger that if the transfer was in neutral, the truck wouldn,'t move no matter what gear it was in?!

I believe you have a tv cable on this truck , if thats the case you might want to make sure its adjusted right if you do it comes off the throttle body by the throttle cable and goes to the tranny. if its not adjusted right it can give you quite a bit of trouble! Might be worth looking in to . Sounds like a weird deal . Hope you get it licked.

No, this truck don't have a kickdown cable, it's strickly electronic. All it has is the throttle & cruise control cable connected to the TB. As I was asking, if the transfer shifter was in neutral, would I still have gears in the automatic?
