I am putting together a 53 F100 that I bought in pieces. I am missing the floorboard panel that the steering column and brake pedal go thru. It is a simple flat piece and I am making one. I have one question about the steering column hole location. I dropped a plumb line from the center of the dash and transfered that to my new floorboard panel to establish the center left to right.
Does anyone have one of these lying around that they could take a look at for me? Is this hole on the same centerline as the top center and bottom center holes that fasten the panel to the cab floorboard? The location I came up with is slightly off center to the left of these two holes, it seems to me that all three holes might have been on the same centerline on an original part. I have not put the hole in yet, hoping someone can confirm if it is on center or to the left.
I am only concerned with the left to right location as I am putting in an aftermarket column.
I'm thinkin if your going with a after market column, you don't need to worry about stock location, You'll just need to line it up so that your steering linkage will work ok, and have the clearences you need. As close to center as possible would be nice, but you have to check at the bottom end.
I am running rack and pinion steering, I have adequate space for steering linkage. I really want to pick up the original location in the floorboard from left to right. The up and down location I have established and am comfortable with. I want to avoid having the steering column going off at some angle and not being "Square" (left to right) with the dash.
Thanks
I've heard of guys making themselves a tool for this important decision. It consists of a broom stick with a pie tin on one end! You can use this while you are seated in the truck to see if the wheel fits where you want to sit. I know this sounds strange, but I am being serious. Jag

That sounds logical to me. Mine ended up a little to the left of center to allow more room for the hanging brake pedal. An inch either way is not going to be noticable.
