Original overdrive problems

My dad in law has put a factory overdrive in his 55. he is having trouble blowing the fuse on the relay when it kicks out. He has converted to 12v but has tried a 12v relay, all the electrical has either been rebuilt or is new. Any suggestions would be helpful, he is at his wits end! (I searched some old threads but couldn't find anything.)

Thanks...TINY

Here's my thoughts. Once in a while I'll blow a fuse. There's 2 windings in the solenoid , one to push it out and one to hold it. The one to push it out draws a lot of current for an instant. If it stays too long on that winding it will blow a fuse. Pull the overdrive solenoid out , take the case off and clean and adjust the points inside. Dennis in PA

The 6v solenoid will draw 2x the current when run on 12v. Try bumping the fuse size, or buy a 12v solenoid. A circuit breaker might be better than a fuse, too. But I agree, first make sure the solenoid's points and grounds (inside) are clean. The cap tends to collect and hold moisture.

Yeah, twice the current which equals 4x the power. That might cause a heat problem.

Once only the holding coil is energized, they apparently work OK on 12v, but obviously it's preferable to use a 12v solenoid in the first place. The pull-in coil draws big-time current on 6v, it would smoke off a fuse on 12v pretty quickly if it isn't kicking out.

'Bots, maybe that heat would help evaporate the condensation that builds up in there! Every one I've opened looks like water was sitting in there.
