I can see hormones playing some part, but it isn't that hard to realize you have a problem and to adjust your food intake to address the issue. Someone doesn't get that fat unless they're overeating. There's no way in the world you can tell me that dude was eating normally and got that fat simply because of hormones or genetics.

Genetics, hormones, predisposition for weight gain, big-boned......It's all BS, it's all excuses. And I'm sick of hearing obese, over-weight, heavy set......that's all BS, too. It's simply FAT and LAZY.

It's a simple matter of physics. Sure, you may have a fast or slow metabolism, and some people burn more calories than others doing the same activities, but it still comes down to simple physics.

Energy In = Energy Out + Energy stored.
[Calories Eaten = Calories Burned (excercise) + FAT storage]

You, and only you can control the "Energy In (calories)" part and the "Energy out (activity)" part.

We'd all like to have fast metabolisms, but we don't. That's life. We're all different.

And before I get flamed, this is coming from a fat guy. I like to eat and drink, and I don't get the excercise I should. What can I say?

At 1,200 LBS, that guy needed 20,000 calories a day just to maintain his weight......Hormones didn't make him eat that much.

See you just discredited your first statement by noting fast metabolism. Its not JUST overeating.

Im 185 6' 1". I havent excercised or more than 15 mins straigt for 3 or 4 years. I sit at a desk all day, and eat what i want, but i dont get fat. I burn more energy sitting down than a lot of people do working out. That IS genetics, and the luck of the draw. Now, bigger people that work out are bigger than me, and may have more fat than i, but on the flip side, they are likely much more healthy than i am too.

Of course it's over-eating. If you have a slow metabolism, you have to eat accordingly. Over-eating for one person, might be under-eating for the next.

If you're gaining weight, you're over-eating. Period.

Eating what you want is just fine, but have you actually measured your intake in kcal? You'd be surprised. Baja is right - it's a simple material balance.

These superobese people not only shovel it in, they have somebody that facilitates this intake. I'm sure this guy wasn't browsing the local el-Walmart; somebody else was wheeling that wheelbarrow.

I dont agree. My wife is 39 years old 5'6 and 250 she works 2 jobs takes care of 2 kids and a grand baby and walks 4 miles a day 2 miles to work and 2 miles back, goes to water aerobics 3 times a week and the gym 2 times a week for a 1 hour workout oh and she walks to get there aswell and has for the last 2 years. She has a thyroid problem and asthma which doesnt act up as much as before she started the exersize routine. when she started the exersize routine she was 260. oh yeah and the biggest part of this is she drinks 6-8 20oz bottled waters a day eats a little less than her dietition has instructed her and she dowsnt lose wheight, sure she drops down 5lbs or so everonce in awhile. I eat more in one average lunch meal than she does all day. She doesnt drink sodas or eat sweets at all non smoker. So any of you that say the medical problems and other things besides overeating is BS, maybe before you get all high and mighty you should actually sit down and do some real research, instead of blowing smoke out your rear ends because untill you do thats all you are doing and its starting to smell. Although I do agree that most overweight people get that way from lack of exersize and overeating.

What does that phone call sound like?
"Hello boss, yeah its me Jaive. I'm uhhhh not gonna make it in today. i'm errrr uhmmmmm to freakishly fat to actually leave the house. I'll try to lift my mass tomorrrow morning."
What size clothes would you wear? "Excue me, do you have these pants in 'Oh-my-Gosh-it's-coming-towards-us'? No sir, I'm sorry we don't carry those pants in anything larger than a 'WHOA!'. Periodically we get those in 'Watch-Out!' but it's rare."

I sympathise with your wife, and I say this with all due respect.
She has a very slow metabolism due to her thyroid condition. She stores more than most people do from what we eat, I'll grant that. But nonetheless, in order to survive our bodies must burn calories to carry out out physical, bio-chemical processes. If you don't get it from your food, your body will resort to burning stored fats. Fact. You must balance how much you eat to match your natural functions. For some people it's 3000 calories a day, for others it's 500. If 500's not enough, and you're hungry, eat foods high in fiber, which take up space, but contribute little in terms of energy.
This balance can be achieved.

My sister-in-law is a dietician, I'll take her word for it. I'm telling it as she has thoroughly described it to me. I am not "blowing smoke out of my rear end" as you so eloquently put it.

Maybe it is all the un-necessary smart-*** comments that Sharpster is personally offended by ?

There are a LOT of people that don't understand physical medical problems and they don't concern themselves to find out about them.

They should so some reaearch instead of passing judgement.
I wonder if any of these people heard of a syndrome called: Elephantitis

It's a real disease.
It surely isn't from Eeating like a pig or lack exercise.

There are other "Reasons" for being obese.

How about person with a salivatory gland problem combined with a de-generative muscle disorder?

The smoke blowing comment wasnt meant directly to you, but more for the more insensitive less educated people on this subject. She eats around 1000 calories a day and a good portion of those are natural from fruits and meats. As for me i am 5'8 and range between 185 and 190 lbs i keep that on because i refuse to give up my morning 20 oz white choclate caramel mocha and me 2 20oz dr peppers a day and i am physically active i run a mile and a half in 12 minutes im 38 have to keep my run time below 14 min 45 seconds due to Navy standards. If I cut the coffee and the sodas, and drink about 6 litres of water a day, i drop 15 -20 lbs in less than a month, as i have done this a few times before. As for my wife she has tried 3 different dieticians and several of the well known diet plans and she has'nt been able to break the 250 mark for like 10 years but with the things she does do she maintains a fairly steady wheight, and with the exception of being over wheight she is very physically fit, heart and cholesterol wise, and is really considering the gastric bypass option. I do believe that once you get to a certain point it is partially laziness and a lack of will power, and or positive reinforcement from those around you. i go to the gyn with my wife but when she goes to the water aerobics myself and my 1 year old granddaughter go to the kiddy pool for her swimming lessons. Ocasionaly i get to the 210-215 range, usually winter time i feel worse and it makes me increase my exersize to reduce then i slack off and move slowly back.

my boyfriend's comment to the pic: why is one man-boob like a Q-cup and the other is like a really saggy B-cup? I thought that was kinda funny.

Other than that its just so sad. I feel like the largest i've ever heard of a person being is like in the 700 lb area. I was shocked at 1200!!

My mom has a slow thyroid and she is always blaming that on the reason why she can't lose weight. In part i think that may contribute because it seems she can never lose more than like 10 lbs when she goes on a major diet. However, she is a big snacker and a cheater. She has absolutely no will power. She's always making excuses to snack. Its not a diet if you don't drop the eating habits that got you to where you are!!

The problem is the word "diet"

What people need is a an "Eating & Excerise discipline"

Thinks like: No Eating after 7 pm except maybe un-buttered popcorn.....Period

You can eat anything you want... just eat it in moderation.

Stay away from white flour products....they turn to sugar and sugar is what puts the pounds on.

Walk however far you can every day..... twice a day.

Even it is only 150 ft.

For winter exercise,,,,if you can afford it ...get a rowing machine.
If not, leave your money at home and Mall Walk..it's free and you will probably meets others doing it.

Elephantiasis is the result of a parasitic infection caused by three specific kinds of round worms. The long, threadlike worms block the body's lymphatic system--a network of channels, lymph nodes, and organs that helps maintain proper fluid levels in the body by draining lymph from tissues into the bloodstream. This blockage causes fluids to collect in the tissues, which can lead to great swelling. It has nothing to do with obesity.

And your other example sounds like a one in a million oddity to me.

Obesity is a national epidemic. Almost half of the US population is considered obese.

Either the government secretly gave 1/2 the population some sort of condition, or there's amuch simpler answer: our way of life -- We as a whole eat too much, and excercise too little.

Funny, how it's not a problem in much of the rest of the world, where - you guessed it - people walk and ride bikes more, they do more physical work, and they eat as nature intended, a lot less than we do and a lot more healthy.

For those of you who are well-traveled, it becomes immediately apparent when you're across seas.
