Question 410 Valvetrain problems!!!!

I built a 410 motor and was going to use Compcams Roller Rockers. After installation found that the pushrods are too LONG!! Can't adjust the valve preload cause the pushrods don't relieve pressure from the rockers. I had the block decked and messed the lenght up!! It was decked about .035 plus the heads were shaved about .010. All I need is a pushrod that is about 1/8 inch(.060) shorter. The question is it worth the extra money for the custom CUP pushrods or just put the stock rockers and custom BALL pushrods back. Is there that much gain with the Roller Rockers?? The custom length Ball pushrods are bad enough at $160. I think the cup pushrods are about $225. Any ideas would be great!! Thanks

1/8 is .125, I would opt for custom pushrods, especially if you upgraded the springs. It all cost too much, with HP motors. Pay a little more now or a lot latter!

If you already bought the rockers, may as well shack out the cash for the pushrods and be happy with it!! Or, i can send you a set of rebuilt stock rockers and a set of new pushrods in a straight swap for the crane rollers, just to make your life easier...

I think I will just order a custom set from Smith Brothers for about $9.31 a piece plus shipping. They can ship them out same day if they know by 12:00PST. Sounds like a deal. Comp said they didn't offer anything and gave me Smiths number. Thanks for the info, now I just have to make sure to get the right length.

$350 for rockers and $150 for pushrods. 500 bucks for 15hp. Sounds about right.

Thats why I am running stock pushrods (like a dummy) and stock non-adjustables. I hear all the stories about bent pushrods and thankfully i have yet to experience it for myself.

summit sells TFS adjustable pushrods for $11, but a 12inch caliper will cost a bit more.

The stock pushrods and rockers will work fine without any mods. That is what is in it right now. I put them back on to do the break in and it runs fine. I just thought since I already paid for the rockers I guess I better try to use them. I just hope I can return the Comp pushrods I bought for a refund, so the custom ones don't hurt as much. If I was going to use the factory rockers I would still buy new hardened pushrods for it cause of the 355lbs springs on it. They are not much cheaper then the cup type pushrods.

I purchased the DSC adjustable push rods and the Dove roller rockers from Dennis. My DSC push rods were to long as well by about 3/16. I didnt have any thing to measure them with accurately. I purchased the Crane adjustable push rods and they were just perfect in length. About 3/16 shorter than the DSC push rods. I have over 4k miles on them and no problems. Hope this helps

I have never heard of adjustable pushrods. How does that work without coming lose? Sorry might be a dumb question, but this is new to me. I don't really have anything to measure mine with either. I was just going by what a mechanic that looked at it said.

At the shop I use the guys were kind of down on adjustable push
rods. I can't remember exactly why. I thought they sounded
pretty neat. Just a fwiw.

The push rods themselves, do not adjust. This is the name for the push rods that you use for the adjustable rockers. Most have a cup or bell end on the top for the adjuster screw, ball end to fit into.

IOW, pushrods for the adjustable rocker arms. There are pushrods with an adjustment on them but they are for finding the proper length and then measuring and ordering custom pushrods.

They do make adjustable pushrods for everyday use, I've never used them myself but I understand they're really a band-aid type fix. Don't know if they make em for FE's though. And you don't need hardened pushrods for an FE. Hardened rod's purpose is for use with guide plates where the pushrod is in contact with the guides. It's a shame you don't need .060 longer rods, I've got a new set of virtually unused Smith's that I need to get rid of for a 390. Ball on both ends for non adjustable rockers.
