I'm looking to start rebuilding a 390 out of a '64 galaxie. I have a set of 427 cross bolt main caps and i'm wondering if any one has every put these in a 390. and what is all involve in it.
Did that to my 428 service block. Relatively simple process if you have the equipment. If you have to pay, be ready to spend +$500 or more then a line bore charge.
If I recall I still have some pictures in my gallery from when I did mine and someone asked about it. I have access to bridgeport and horizontal mill and did all the work myself. I paid for line bore only. I had about 6 hrs in it.
No any FE can be crossbolted with Pro-Grams Main caps... Its good insurance for a motor your going to be real hard on!! Pro-Gram caps are about $300+ and of course the machining.... JMO...
Yeah Carl's right...FlatLander Racing is about the cheapest I have ever seen them....I know last year on occation they had them for $299.95.....
You might send Barry R a PM and ask if he can get them any cheaper..He has some Damn good connection's...and might be able to score some for you?
And with a crossbolted 427 block, you could go either way..Stock crossbolts..Or the Pro-Gram Caps...even tho with the Pro_Gram caps the Main webbing still has to be machined back to the Pan rail, as the Pro-Gram caps are wider than the stock ones and dont use a spacer in between the caps and the block..and then the block is spot faced on the outside to square it up to where the bolts will be on the same plane as the Caps...

Larry you dont go under the pan rail.....The Pro-Grams a machined even with the pan rail on the inside of the Main Web....And then with the Taper in the block...even without the bosses..the block is spot faced..So that the crossbolts will be Paralell with the D on the main caps... Damn it Larry..you know what I'am about..were both machinist..
You block the web off even with the pan rail.... You dont go undr..as that would weakin the block.... You know better Larry..Come on... FFRCorba001 has a site that tells all by his house.. LOL..
I HAD to go under the rail.........since there was NOTHING there to make a spot big enough to put a spacer on....at least on my service block. Only the one side had the bosses there to surface for spacer. The other was barely anything and I figured I just go down to side skirt.
Yeah I see what your talking about Larry...the one side is tapered up to the pan rail..yes and your other side had the boss....But you used the Factory crossbolts..and there not as wide as the Pro-Grams and dont need the spacer..So they go all the way across from pan rail to pan rail..which make for a pretty slick set-up...
On the Pro-Grams..the side that has the tapered main web..only gets notched enough to support the crossbolt...
But the Bottom line is...Now your motor is pretty much bullet Proof !!
Ah...I see. I could barely get enough flat to stick a bolt thru and I thought that was pretty worthless for support. "IF" I would get Pro Gram caps, I'd probably do it just like I did. Make some spacers and fill in the gap. Maybe it would be a moot point? Not sure til I see the caps in person.
I have the other 390 motor out of black car that I want to make bulletproof so I can really turn up the boost. Someday I'll work on it.....oh, ya...when there's money too LOL!!
When I milled a block years ago with 427 caps the block cracked at two locations, both at the bottom at the sharp 90 degree inside corners. If I were to do it again this inside corner would have a milled radius as well any strengthening ribs cut into.
