Backfiring? That's new.

Backfiring? That's new.
Ok, well actually no it isn't. My 1990 F-250 302 has recently started backfiring, i guess that's what it is anyway. When I pull away from a light in 1st, sometimes it hesitates pretty badly at around 1,000-1,750 rpm and at times there's a loud knock, sounds like the bottom of the drivers side of the engine (of course i'm in the drivers seat so...) Maybe a backfire in the header???
I put new plugs and wires on it last week, that helped a little, then a new fuel filter, that helped more, then I waxed it, no difference. But it will still do it every now and then.
A little background, I'm in oklahoma going to college, and the truck sat in Montana for 8months without me, the only use it got was my dad driving it a few miles a month to keep everything charged up. I pulled my horse trailer down to oklahoma with it and have been driving it here for about 2 months, so i assume?? that all the bugs should be worked out of it? It has almost 200,000 miles on it and the fuel mileage has dropped 3-4mpg's too to around 10 in town. Any advice???
