I was wondering what the curb weight is on the early to mid eighties rangers. I am looking for a small light pickup to put my 302 in. I am not interested in dragracing. I just want a daily driver that can have my v8 and fuel economy too. Thanks in advance.
Because they are fords for one thing. Another they are a lighter pickup than I drive now. I would consider a newer one just as long as its not running. I do not want to pull a good running engine out just for a project.
The later ones tend to weigh more, more accessories, heavier built, though lighter metal is used.
For a 302, a later Ranger (93+) will pose less problems, as it shares a common frame with the Exploder which had the 302. Even with a loaded Ranger, with a 302 you'll have to do little more than notch the heater box slightly to make it fit.
my '93 s/c 4.0 4x4 5spd weighs in at 4500. if you have a local farm elevator where grain is taken, go there after hours with a vehicle and drive on the scale platform, most of the time the scale is left on and you can see the readout (usually digital ) through a window.

The Frame on the ranger was the same from 83-97. In 98 they went to the 95+ explorer frame and front suspension.
I see they are less than 3000 in 2wd version. That was what I was hoping for. Looks like it will be a worthwhile project. As soon as I get the 351 built for the big truck I am gonna pull my 302 and look for a ranger. Thanks everyone.
It will definitely be under 3xxx lbs. Now, if you stuff a V8 in there, I imagine you'd come close to that 3xxx lbs, but then again it is a mid 80s that you're looking for and they won't weigh as much as the later model Rangers. Keep us posted.
When I do this conversion I will post a thread about it and try to keep it descriptive as possible. It is gonna be aleast several months before I start due to dollars. I figure if I use an 83 to 86 and put an aluminum intake on the 302 I can keep it right at 3000 pounds. The year ranger I use will be mostly dictated by what I can rescue from a scrapyard at the time.
