Guys I got a 1999 Super Duty, extended cab , short bed, 5.4, automatic, 4x4, single rear wheel. What kinda of millage should I be gettin, currently gettin 10 mpg, weather I am pulling a trailer or completly unloaded. The truck is completely stock, with factory 4.11 gears.
Are you doing regular tune-ups ?? Dont forget about the fuel filter!! How about air pressure in your tires ?? With 4.11 gears dont expect alot better but I would think 12-13 would be reasonable. Hope this helps -Rick
i have a 2006 f250 5.4 ext cab 8ft bed with 3.73 gears and when i ride i pretty hard...letting the rpm get up over 2000 i get about 11.5 mpg and when i drive very easy and harley never let the rpms get over 2000 i get about 13.5...tire pressure and all that other stuff will help to a degree but the best thing is your driving habits...DRIVE SLOWER AND START OFF SLOWER...this is a lot of truck to get moving with the 5.4...dont get me wrong i love my truck but you have to drive it like theres and egg under the gas to get better gas mileage
I have an 03 F-250 single cab with a 5.4L and 3.73 gears. During the winter, I get between 9 & 10 MPG, and during the warmer weather, if I really take it easy, I can get 14 MPG. The 4.11 gears are worth at least a 10% reduction in mileage in my opinion, so I think you're actually doing OK. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast.
I have a set of 285 / 75 / 16 from my old truck, that I could put on if it would help the millage any.
Also, would a k&n air intake kit help???
What about a low restriction cat back system???
The truck runs like a sewing machine, and will pull a house down if I need to, so I sure hate to park it cause gas is $3.99 a gallon where I live.
Thanks again.
10mpg is rough, that should improve with what was recommended. I'd start with a tune up and then if you are looking for a couple mods to get the mpg and power up, you can start small with a K&N air filter and a new fuel filter. Then make your way to a an improved air intake and new exhaust. The options are far wide......here are two guides that help breaking down the benefits of both and brand product links too:
My last gas engine truck also got 11 mpg no matter what I did (full/empty, towing or not). It also had a set of 4.11s in it. I now drive a 6.0 PSD. I just got 21.6 mpg on my last highway trip. That is a new record for this truck. I just rolled over 30,000 miles. It normally gets about 19 on the highway and 16 in town.
