Need to replace the king pins in a 55, is it best to remove the axle and take it to someone or can you do it in the truck? What kind of hone do you use?
I took the axle out and brought it to a spring/suspension shop. I was surprised to hear how many king pin jobs he did. Still a pretty common job up here in New England.
I removed my F-600 axle and took it to a frame and suspension shop in Kent Wa.
Mine needed 0.010 oversize pins. The kit came from RareParts.
It wasn't very expensive.
They reamed it 0.010 oversize and I put it all back together.
The whole job was under $250 including the $150 or so for the kit.
Once I get the truck ready to drive daily, I'll have them do a complete front end alignment.
I bought the king pin reamer and did my own. It only cost a bit more than having it done by a professional, and I think the job is almost as good as his would have been.
After I finished I found an old-school spring shop that would have pressed out the old and fit the new ones for $25 to $30 labor. (with me bringing them the axle - more if they did it on the truck.) They re-bushed my springs for $20 with me suppling the parts. I bought the parts from LMC truck and they only cost me twice what they would have if the shop had supplied them.
They pressed out pins in seconds that I had spent hours trying to get free.
I strongly suggest you work the phone, calling spring shops in your area. You will get a better job and avoid a lot of strain, plus it might save you money.
Removing the axle is no big deal, just remember if and where any wedge shims are installed.
