i just read this in a nother thread..ive read in other threads that guy's love the blue.i was about to order one till i read this.can any one tell me witch is better and why?? just want the best with out hurting my truck..thanks alot
Ron
I jumped on the blue CPS bandwagon last year. After all the debate settled down I switched back to black. I will say that my truck ran better with the blue CPS, however, I question the lineage of my original. Probably some aftermarket far east junk. After replacing the blue with another black CPS from IH the truck ran better still. Now I'm just saving money for my DP chip. I still have both of them right next to my 10mm socket, just in case.
Yeah, i did the blue. Bluey combined with the hpx really quieted the motor going down the road, but my mileage suffered. A short while later, bluey failed! Luckily, the place I bought it from sent me another, but now I have a new blacky in the truck and bluey in the glovebox just in case.
Just do a search for "blue CPS" and you will bring up days worth of reading!! I went with the original black one once I talked with Jody about ordering my chip and he told me to stick with the black one.
I went with the blue one after all the hype a couple of months ago. Hell, I figured why not at least I can use my black one as a spare. I did notice the idle was better and the truck was a little more quiet. Now, after ordering a DP-Tuner I just put another new black one back in. I have two spares now.
yes i do remeber that thread... but it just stoped...i guess i better stick to the black ones till i find out more about the blue...sounded so good too..sorry to have botherd you...thanks
I had previously read a thread posted that gave a part number from international for a CPS I am not sure if this was the blue CPS or not. I took this part number to the international shop and they were about to ring me up, before payying I asked if this was a the cps for the 7.3L powerstroke, the techncian told me no it wasn't. He then went back and pulled another cps out of the store room. He said the first peice would have worked but it would have retarded my timing by 4 deg, it was ment for their 6 cyl diesel engine. Not sure if these were the blue abd black cps's that everyone is talking about just thought I would relay my exprience.
The one you would have ordered is the blue one. The blue ones are for the DT466 6 cyl IH engines. They will work in our trucks, and I, like so many others, jumped on that bandwagon too. But, also after talking to Jody, I went back to black promptly, since the blue one does change the timing and Jody designed the chip for the black one. The blue one now resides as the spare in my glovebox.
There was never a definitive answer to what the blue one does, and it seemed to affect everyones trucks differently. Do like someone posted above and search for that thread. It's something like 200 posts long, but it never got anywhere.
My brother-in-law is a diesel mechanic and the blue works good in non-chipped or mildly tuned trucks, definetly not a Jody chipped one. I have a old Hypertech programmer on mine and the blue CPS. It really does noticebly smooths out the engine and also quiets it down some too. The biggest difference is the blue has a stronger magnet. This will slightly change the timing, but it's a very small change. I'm leaving mine in until it breaks. I've notice no difference in fuel mileage and I like the benefits for now. We'll see if it plays out. The one thing my brother-in-law said that convinced me to try it is that it will not do any harm. So what the heck, I'll try almost anything once....
i've noticed that a lot of people are staying or going back to the black cps because just like matt said the blue has a notch inside which delays the magnetic pick up. so why advance timing with tuners and chips and then retard it with the wrong cps? this is why the trucks seem to run smoother and quieter.
