Tranny ID
It would help to know what size truck you have. But otherwise, it's real easy to tell. If the shift tower (the metal piece that is bolted to the top of the transmission and has the shift arm sticking out the top) is cast iron, it is a Ford model T-18 (F-100) or T-19 (F-250). If, however, the shift tower is aluminum (you'll be able to tell by looking at it, the shift tower will be a light silver compared to the rest of the cast iron gear housing), then it is the more desireable NewProcess 435 (F-250 and always in F-350 on up).
The T-series trannies are good, too, but the NP 435 has stronger shifters, rails, shafts and gears.
Another note, if it is 4-wheel drive, then it is most likely an NP 435.
You can find out the year by recording the factory case number (I don't know where it is located) and taking it to a nearby Ford dealer (or get a Ford service manual from 1971) to be decoded. I recommend going to the dealer, they should know where to find the case number.
Good luck!

there is an id tag on the NP435 under all the goo (LOL) which sits under two bolts at the mounting flange of the side cover. If you get under the vehicle and look where the fill/drain plugs are, just forward of them is a bolted-on plate, (like
4"X4"), and the complete data identifying the tranny is on that tag. It's often covered with goo--a nasty mix of gear lube and road asteroids and you'll have to scrape some of that off to see it. Just removing the two nuts that hold the side cover in that position allow you to remove the tag, and then take it to your favorite place to tell you what you need to know.
