Hi & thanks for reading my thread. I have a '04 psd 6.0 dually cc with 52,000 miles. It's a great truck, except that often when I park on the slightest incline the darned thing won't shift from 'Park'. It stays locked. To prevent it from locking I have to put it in neutral, set the parking brake then place into park & I don't have the problem. Any advice?
It's just got a lot of weight on the park lock thing for lack of the correct term. If you apply the brakes very firmly it will typically allow it to shift out, though on extreme grades it can require quite a force. Normal as long as brakes cause it to work normally.
I've seen it happen on other brand vehicles as well. As said there's a lot of weight being forced on the park lock thing. To avoid it and any damage that may result from it apply the parking brake just after you've come to a stop and still have your foot pressed down on the brake pedal. Then shift into park and you'll have no problems getting it back into drive. As a bonus the constant use of the parking brake will keep it from seizing up and you're truck rolling off down the hill should the park pin thing in the tranny snap.
My truck does this too- but I don't even have to be on an incline. My resistance is not so much from the gears but it seems that the actual shift lever won't "un-lock"... If I depress the brake firmly, it will allow me to move the shift lever out of park, but I have to press harder on the brake pedal than I normally would.
Have any other 6.0er's experienced THIS type of resistance, and is it fixable? I guy at the performance shop that I visit said to take it in for warranty work, but it is really not a big issue to me. Anyone out there know how I could fix/ adjust this myself?
Yes, as so many have said, pressing the brake pedal firmly makes it unlock. But it is a quirky thing that seemed to progress with time & I was obviously concerned that one day I'd be getting a tow! Ouch! Thanks to all who replied
its the brake switch on the pedal.
check and see if the wireing is loose and if not then the brake switch should be replaced. when you hit the pedal do you hear a clicking noise from down there? if not then its the brake switch. and it will get worse that switch also controls the cruise control to shut off when you press the brake.
i have had this happen to me and no fun when comeing up on traffic.

JR is correct. These trucks are controlled by wire for everything it seems. No cables to adjust. Have the dealer look at it if its under warranty. If not there is two switches on the brake pedal not sure which one controls the park lock. I would replace both to make sure.
