Tailgate

Does anyone know if an F-3 tailgate is the same as an F-1.
I am pretty sure it is, but I don't know if the logo would have been different like the hub caps.
Thank you for you help.

Actually the tailgates are very differant, the F-1 tailgate is narrower and shorter than the F-2, F-3 tailgate. The F-1 with a 6.5ft box, the tailgate should be 49in wide and about 17.5in high. The 8ft Express box on the F-2 and F-3 has a tailgate 54in wide and a bit over 19in high (measurements out of a 1952 dealer brochure). They both do have the same FORD script in the center panel though.

As of now, no one make a reproduction F-2/3 tailgate that I know of, and any originals in decent shape usually bring a pretty penny. The one I have for my 1952 F-3 is rather beat up, but should be fixable (but then my idea of fixable is a nightmare for many).

I apperciate you help, however I have one more question now. Unless you are wrong I now have a tailgate I can't use. So I am curious to know what they go for.

Jon is correct. Your truck appears to be an F1 from the pictures. I couldn't find a picture that shows the tailgate in relationship to the box. Are you saying you have a 3/4 ton tailgate?

Values on these are hard to predict. I paid over $200 for a perfect one a few years ago. I've seen them go for more than that on eBay. But I also saw one go unsold last week on eBay. It had no bids and only a $15 opening bid as I recall. Bob Jones and I saw one at Iola the week before last with asking price of $75. We passed on it, then I went back to work on the seller the next day but couldn't find it. I'd suggest either putting yours on eBay, or listing it in the classifieds here. Good luck.

Unsure on price, but there was a "wanted" ad for an F3 tailgate in the 48-60 classifieds.

Yes mtflat my pickup is an F-1.
I am only asking what size mine should be because I am in living in Kansas, (where I found this tailgate) and my pickup is in Iowa.
I measured it last night and the tailgate is 54 inches wide and I think it was 20 tall, at anyrate it is a 3/4 ton 1 ton tailgate.

Didn't they make them wider in 48?
Or was that only the cab?

48 got a new cab, but the F1's used the same raised panel box from '42 thru mid-50. You might want to drop down a forum and ask the "47 and older" guys if the 42-47 3/4 and one ton tailgates measure the same as the one you have. I'm not sure.

I stole a bed side tire mount of a '47 1 ton and the box looked identical. The only difference I could see was the different fender bolt pattern.

If you go to the top of the forum and look in the Reference Threads that has been stickied there is a good parts interhcange chart....click on the F-1, F-2, F-3 Parts Swap Chart adn it will take you to it.

51dueller was right. The same boxes and gates were used 42-52 in 3/4 and 1 tons.
