Hello to all.
I am in need of some smart fellers. 99 Ranger with the auto trans. I can start the truck in park but then I can't shift it into any gear. If I start it in nuetral, I can drive it normally, provided that I don't put it in park. The brake lights do not work, but the fuse is ok. I can not get a test light to light by probing at the brake switch. What actually prevents the shifter from engaging while the motor is running and the brake pedal is not depressed? Going out to do some more probing and scratch my head.

Voltage from the brake light switch/BLS is spliced to the brake lights & to the shift lock. No voltage from the BLS & it wont unlock.
Since you dont have voltage at the BLS, have you checked for voltage at the fuse?
It should be there with the key on or off.
