Guys, please forgive me but I didn't know where to turn. My wife has a 2000 Sable with the 3.0L DOHC. I'm not sure if this the same 3.0 as in the Ranger but I figure someone might be able to help. Last week the "check engine" light popped up and since I was near Advance Auto I slid in to get them to check the code. It was something like "insufficient EGR flow" . No problem. I replaced the EGR valve, pulled the battery cable for about 30 minutes and went on my way. Sure enough, about 20 miles later, it pops back on.
I "decarboned" my 4.0L Ranger last year per the instructions here on the site (with the PM-3). Is there a way to "decarbon" this engine as well? Should I even look for some other "fix" first?
As always, thanks to anyone for their help and opinions.
P.S. If it matters, this engine has about 80,000 miles.
Usually, the first item to go out is the egr position sensor. Free things you can do is clean the egr tube, the orifice going from the valve to the throttle body and even the foam filter for the solenoid (on rangers anyways). Also, you can remove the egr valve and clean it to make sure it moves freely. Don't give up.

Thanks 6.8. I'll start on that tomorrow after church.
I know, I've dealt with this and hit it right the first time, thankfully, though in my case it was the two hoses leading to that sensor that fudged things up.

Great Advice! I just replace my DPFE Sensor on my '99 Ranger 3.0L and reset the code by disconnecting the battery for 20min. No code as of now and idles much smoother. Easy fix - it took me an hour, but that was mainly trying to connect the hoses (a snug fit in a tight place). Thanx for the pix and advice. I'll keep you updated on performance and whether the code comes back or not, in which case I'll probably have to replace the EGR valve. (I had both DTC P0401 - EGR flow insuficient and DTC P1400 - DPFE Circuit Low Input.) Feels like a new truck now and I'm getting ready to do some mods -- maybe a performance chip upgrade?
