Demo Derby...Gas Tank question

Demo Derby...Gas Tank question
Well I'm about to enter my first demo derby in August. I have a 92 Ford Taurus Station Wagon...I have mostly everything ready on it except for the gas tank. It needs to be moved inside of the car and mounted. My problem is that the tank on the car is pretty big and I would like to use something smaller because the rules state you can only have 3 gallons of gas in the tank anyways so theres no need for a large tank. My other problem is that if I find a smaller tank then most likely the gas pickup device on the car wont work with a different tank. My idea is to get a 12 volt electric fuel pump and use that with a smaller tank. Would that be able to work since it is EFI and there has to be a certain pressure in the line? Would a 12 volt pump provide enough pressure in the line?

I have done several derbies myself and have found that boat tanks work out great. Although for the mext race, I had a friend make me a fuel cell for it. The boat tanks can be bought anywhere for a reasonable price. Bass Pro has a 6 gallon for only about $15.
For the fuel pump, you are correct that a certain pressure is needed. I had a crown vic EFI and we used a 12 volt pump. It only had enough pressure to keep the car running for a few seconds. So we contacted an old friend and borrowed one of his race car fuel pumps that put out the needed pressure. Is the stock fuel pump one that is mounted inside the tank or is it an in-line pump?

When I derbied a 92 Taurus I took the pump from the tank, made a small 1foot squared tank and put the pump in there. If memory serves me correct the engine requires 60 psi of fuel pressure to run and your standard 12 volt pump puts out something like 12 to 15 psi. The high pressure pumps for fuel injection are relativly expensive and not worth it for a derby car in my opinion, that's why I made a tank to run the factory pump.
