ok, someone PLEASE help me here, I'm at wits end now. my toyota decided to start misfiring.at first, it only did it on startup, till I let the car warm up for a little bit, now it doesnt matter, it'll run only on two cylinders all the time.
a little info, its an 86 Totota Tercel wagon, with the 3AC motor, auto tranny, and 2bbl carb. its a good car, if I could just fix this ungodly misfire.
so far, I've cleaned the EGR valve, and tube coming to egr from the exhaust manifold, put in new plugs, still need to do wires. the first time, I thought it was the choke staying close when it needed to open, now I dont freakin know. compression test revealed 125 psi in all but the #4 cylinder, which was 120. plugs were ok when I pulled em out, though I think the #1 cylinder was the offending cylinder because the plug was covered in carbon deposits.
All vac lines are good, filters clean and new, as is fuel.
this is my only vehicle at the moment, and I need it running.
Check the cap for carbon tracking, and make sure the rotor shaft doesn't have any paly in it, double check the air filter and choke, put in new wires, and clean or replace the plugs.
Is it blowing smoke now?
Yes, black like its running too rich. the engine felt like it was running rich when I bought the car too, the idle was just erratic like a rich engine would be, normal for a minute, then it would drop, and occaisionally stall, then back to normal.
I dont know, could a clogged catalyitic converter be causing this? it'll run and accelerate with this misfire in park, but in any gear other than park or neutral, it just dies because it cant make the power to move the car.
ok, well this thread can die now, I put new plugs and wires in and it fixed it. the one thing I thought WASNT the problem turned out to actually be it. thank you GOD it wasnt the distributor itself, those things are $202 for the whole assembly for my yota.
