dont listen to the naysayers, its pretty easy straight forward conversion, u got a welder and a cutoff wheel you can easily make this happen in a weekend. i rooting for ya. pathfinder used to do it all the time with 2wd vans and same with quadravan, easier on a pickup tho.
Skip, while that is a true statement. also remember or membership. The majority of our members are young and new at this. Most of them seem to not even own a vacuum gauge, test light or dvom, nor know how to use one, find a misfire ect.
i sitll have hope for the millenals generation i guess.
I do too and just the fact any of them like old trucks is great but cutting off a front end and welding on a 4x4 plus all the other stuff involved is way beyond most of these guys.
Wow this is an old thread but obviously has some great info because it keeps coming up. I'm doing a frame off complete rebuild on a 69 F100 4x4. Just got the frame redone and should be getting cab back within the week. Problem I'm having is no one sells the cab mounting kit for a 4x4, and everything I read says the frame to cab mounting kit for a 2WD does not work. Why is this? I can't reuse the ones I pulled because they're rusted.
Hi, I ran into the same thing - everything I read said the 2x4 and 4x4 rear cab mounts were different. And nobody sold 4x4 mounts. I reused the 2x4 cab mounts and they worked fine so I'm not sure what the issue is. The rear cab mounts were a little different design than the rest of the body mounts. They don't use a bolt, large flat washers and separate nut - the top washer is threaded so a separate nut is not used. My 4x4 donor truck had aftermarket body mounts and were lesser quality than the original Ford mounts on my 2x4 truck. I bought a pack of body shims to help align the bed and cab, but I didn't have to use many. Hope this helps.
I did get a smart a#$ remark about the age of the thread when I posted - but since I was using a 50-year-old service manual to do the project, a 10-year-old posting seemed like recent info. Once I completed the project I realized that a good bit of the information I'd read about 2x4 to 4x4 conversions was inaccurate. I know my info is right because I did it. Even though yours is an original 4x4, most of what I posted will be helpful. In particular, parts that are 4x4 specific and are hard to find. Just let me know if I can help.

"Ron Struble", you may just to have more posts before you're allowed to insert pictures. It used to be that a new member had to have at least 5 posts, before you could add pictures. Welcome to the Forum!
Thanks "tommytp" for the write-up on the differences and what is needed for the conversion. This will help members (and future members) for a long time to come. (I rep'ed you for it.)
There were many 4x4 built between 1967 and 72. If you want to have a look see at mine to get one more under you belt check out my web page. John is exactly right on the swap though. 4x2 and 4x4 frames are not the same. Not even close. Save yourself the heartache and get a 4x4 frame to start with. Much easier to swap the body than try to modify the frame. Happy hunting.
