hi first of all i have a 1993 f-250 diesel and about a month ago it started acting funny when i started it it would idle ruff than die and take a while to start back up so bought the return line kit and changed all the caps orings and lines last night, but i am still having the same problem. i am pretty sure i put every thing in right just like i took it off does anyone have any idea of what could be going wrong.
hi guys i was wondering if some one could explain the fuel system to me in a 1993 f-250 diesel. i know alittle bit about it but i am not really use to diesel's yet this is my first one.
the truck runs for about 8 - 10 seconds before it dies but it extremly ruff. i am going to seal the line of from the fuel filter to the # 1 injector today. and yes all the caps are tight i went back through them yesterday to make sure. thanks for your help.
8 to 10 seconds sounds like the fuel filter is draining back to the tank.
How long since the fuel filter was changed?
Check and make sure the fuel filter is tight, the filter base is tight and the filter drain valve is closed.
Did you do anything to the engine service wise about the time it started acting up?
the fuel filter was changed about 2 weeks ago i had the same problem with it before i changed it. i will check to make sure that it is tight and the drain is fully closed. i have not done any service to the truck just one day this problem started.
i forgot to add eailer in the week the tank got down to alittle less then a quarter of a tank and the few times that i let it sit over night and the tank was lower that a quarter it started fine it was smooth and did not shut off i dont know if this information is of any use but i thought it was kind of strange that it starts fine when the tank is low compared to when its full
have you looked at the fuel lift pump. like a chevy gasser, there may be fuel leaking from there at the weep hole and draining the filter. Also look at the injection pump below the mounting neck is another weep hole, hard to get to .. use paper towell under there to check for leakage. If all that is good, you may have the fuel pick up tube broken in the tank. Is the problem systematic with only one tank of both?
hi guys i went all through the fuel lines and the filter looking for leaks and tighting every thing couldnt find anyyhing wrong. then i went out to get fuel and i filled up the rear tank (i havent used it a few weeks) and the truck started smooth and it didnt die(it was sitting for a few hours when i tryed restarting it) so i am going to let it sit over night and see if the problem is gone. if it is just the front tank that this happend with what could be the problem? thanks for your guys help so far
If it won't start the next time you try it check for air at the schraeder valve.
If you see air you know you still have a leak and you will just have to keep hunting to find the leak.
I finally switched my 91 factory fuel filter over to a Racor fiter this weekend. The drain on my factory fiter had a bit of dirt stuck on the seat, just enough dirt to not let fuel escape, but enought to let air suck in under vacuum.
also, on the return line circuit, you may not see fuel leaking but you can still get air intrusion - dont ask how, but you can. Been there, seen it, done it, got the belt buckle annnnd the tee shirt.
well i have been using the rear tank for a few days now and it has started smooth every time and not died once so i guess there is something wrong with the front tank. any idea of what is wrong. thanks alot guys
mine does the same thing. When the rear tank gets below half, it idles rough and dies right after starting. I suspect that the pick up tube is cracked, so ti sucks air, and perhaps this allows air to enter the system when the engine is not running. Everything is fine when running from the front tank. Am I off base here guys?
seems to me that you're on base dupsey. Either a broken pickup tube or bad connection on top of the tank from erosion. You and brownie should try to get the fuel out of the tank so you can lower it and have a look.
whats up guys i am going to drop the tank and check everything out. if there is a problem with the sending unit where do i get a replacement i have been looking around but can't find them.also if the sending unit is bad do you think i should replace the rear one too?
