I have decided to attend Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats this year. It just seems like something every gearhead should do once in his lifetime. The event starts on August 12. I will be there from Friday the 11th, spend the weekend, and maybe stay the rest of the week.
I will be camped at the "Bend in the Road" with my baby (12 foot) camp trailer and driving my red jeep wagon.
The salt flats are located at the state line between Utah and Nevada, east of Reno along I 80. Wendover is the nearest town. Anyone who wants to join me can just throw a sleeping bag in the back of their truck and bring a cooler full of sandwiches and beer.
They allow spectators to mingle with the pit crews, and full run of the pits. Just be prepared for desert sun with no shade within 30 miles.
Hey Clint, you musta watched that worlds fastest indian movie and got inspired eh? Sounds like a good trip. I'll be backpacking with my son in the NICE AND COOL high country right about then or I would consider a trailer trip out there to join up. Have fun and post pics of the event okay?
I will, but have not seen the movie. I did get inspired enough to order it, tho. If it gets too hot or turns boring, I too will run for the high country. I will be on the east side of the park for a few days before anyway.
You know Clint, you might want to go buy one of those portable swamp coolers to put into your trailer. That is if your trailer doesn't have air conditioning. I would think that the principle of evaporative cooling works real well out there in the low desert, being so dry and all. My wife bought one and it really does work good, as long as you have enough electricity to power it and enough water to feed it. A couple of 5 gallon water bottles wouldn't be a bad idea to have along.
Yea, I use a swamp cooler in my home office - good for about 20 degrees drop even today.
But for the trailer, one of my friends mounted a small window unit refer unit on his and it worked very good. Cost less than $100 at the home store, but he did need to relocate the batteries on the front of his trailer.
None of these ideas will help at the Salt Flats - there is no power available, other then battery. But it does cool off at night so you can sleep well.
A generator would come in handy eh? I've got a 3800 watt Robin Subaru genni for sale at a low price. PM me if you think you might need one for the trip. I have a Honda now that I use with my Travel trailer so the Subaru is just taking up room within my limited storage. I keep tripping over it. Only has a couple of hours on it though.
That generator and a 100.00 home depot AC unit would be the cats meow and defitely should keep a 12ft trailor cool.
I have a 6500BTU "room" AC unit (supposed to cool a 400sq ft room) for my 15 foot trailor, and even with 5 of us in it, keeps it in the low 80's, high 70's on a 100+ day. Turn on a fan and it's almost sinful how cool it feels
I am going to pass on the generator for now - I have to leave the trailer unattended durring the day, and there is no place to store it. Once I get my 59 running I will mount one in the box for times like this.
Have you thought about a "suitcase" generator? Those things aren't much bigger than a...well, briefcase, take up little room..kinda pricy, but easy to stash away and I've seen some rated at 3000 surge, and 2500 continuous....means they'll run a 20amp curcuit after load draw. Most small AC units like 6000BTU's need 7 or 8 amps to run, and 10-12 amps for start up.

What do you want for the generator? I'm also going to Bonneville and all I have is a little Honda 350W, keeps the batteries charged and the lights on. I take it something about the Harbor Freight Generator didn't click with you. What was it?

It is 106 in my backyard now!
Clint:
It is not nearly as hot here, and Bonneville is only 102 today. We have had nice cooling thunderstorms all week. The movie is one of the greatest most inspiring movies you will ever see. Be sure to rent it. Glad you're going, I will look for you there.
Clint,
I lived in Fresno for a year, back in 1965-66. It was hot then in July and August. How does Scelzi stand it? I am glad that Wendover is at 4000 feet, and that we are at 6200 feet, really helps.
