anyone have first hand experience with these one wire ignition systems for ford? sure would be nice to get rid of those wires out from under the hood, especially after slinging mud all weekend! sounds like they pack a bigger punch too.
not sure, but they might be the same thing as converting to a chevy electrical system. I know a lot of guys that'll do this with their alternators. Not sure if the dame applies to the distributers.
It's a custom distributor, that fits the Ford engines but has the GM HEI electronics. I can't say anything about it because I have never used one, but I do know the GM electronic part works very well when it's in a GM engine.
I had one on my FE it worked awesome. Best thing is, they custom curve it just for your app before they ship it to you. One wire hook up and your done.
I just ordered my 2nd DUI dist. the people are great and I really like the distributor. I got about 10 years out of one with no problems and prolbably would of got more if I hadn't kept welding on my truck without unhooking the dist. first. I have heard that the current or something messes with the electronics...anyway I think I did something to the pick-up coil, then it helped the module on it's way to nowhere. After messin with it for a while (and learning a lot..) I surprisingly took some advice from my wife, and ordered a new distributor.DUI still had my specs on file and set up another and shipped. I had the new one the same week and I think this one is better than the last. So now I'll rebuild the old one for a spare...By the way this is in my 390 fe, and I don't think anybody else builds hei's for fe's.
There are plenty of GM vehicles with Ford 9 inch rears in them. Lots of streerods with mustang II frontends. Even my old Gravely tractor takes a Ford style filter(I do not think Ford can lay claim to the filter configuration, but it's still neat that my lawnmower takes the same filter as my older Ford vehicles).
I just put a 302 in a 56 Lincoln a couple of months ago. We used the DUI distributor. I works great, and I will use it again. I think the design is GM, but the parts are Davis. jd
I have one on the 300-6 in my 69, I will be putting one on the 390 in my 72. The 300-6 one is on it's second truck, and will be going onto the next new engine in that truck. I've tried the DSII conversion, regular points, and pertronix, but this is the only ignition system I have run that can reliably light off a high compression engine.
The only thing I have had to do to this unit in the five years I have had it, is replace the cap and rotor about every 4k ( I run a .060" gap with it, so lots of power across the gap), and I had to replace the module when I put it in the current truck. Other than that, no issues, no complaints, only good things to say, and well worth the price.
