Oil's Staying Inside The Engine Now

I posted a few weeks ago about an engine oil leak that I couldn't figure out. Engine valley was dry, and so were all the other places that tend to leak on these rigs - head plugs, turbo, hpop plugs and lines, etc, etc. I appreciate the help and suggestions from those who offered it.

It turned out to be the rear main seal and the rear engine cover. This engine was rebuilt a few months before I bought the truck, but apparently whoever rebuilt it didn't do it well. But now, after a few hundred bucks, all the oil is staying in the engine where it belongs.

Also, for those who might be interested, the rear main seal can be replaced without pulling the engine. And so can the engine oil pump (LPOP).

I still have the problem with the low oil pressure at idle. Replacing the engine oil pump did improve the situation, but didn't make it right. Do these engines have a high pressure bypass like the gassers do that relieves oil pressure when it's cold or at high RPM's? I'm still grasping for something to replace that might get it back to normal.

Anyway, I'm driving the beast, and it runs great. I'm just avoiding long idle times, and when I can't, I switch on the fast idle setting.

Yep. The hardest part of that job is getting the tranny out.

I'm not aware of any bypass other than the anti-drainback check valve. If it were stuck open you'd have a bear of a time starting it due to the high pressure reservoir draining....but assuming the low side pump could keep up with the high side pump it would run fine....maybe better since it would be getting oil straight off the drivers side oil rail.

good to know about the LPOP. but how did you get the pan to clear? or did you not need to take it off? i have been putting off resealing my oil pan because i did not see how it could clear the support that is under the engine (without pulling the engine), but mine is a 2wd and maybe a 4x4 has a little different set-up.

The LPOP is a "Gerotor" type pump located on the front of the crankshaft under an oil pump body plate (cover). You remove the crankshaft vibration damper, the oil pump body cover, then the inner and outer gerotors. Installation is in reverse order.

Plowhand has it right - the LPOP comes off the front of the engine. If you have leaks around your oil pan, the engine's gotta come out to fix it right, 4wd or not. And be sure to use the Ford sealant - the rear engine cover on mine was leaking because whoever rebuilt it used regular over-the-counter stuff. They probably used it on my oil pan, too, but luckily it's not leaking - yet.
