after the engine heats up it won't start, it'll crank over some but i can't get it to fire i end up having to wait an hour or two before i can start it again. Also my manual steering is loose is there a way to fix or adjust this?
If you are able to start up consistently when its cold but never when its hot then it is probably ignition but could be fuel. The first thing you may want to do is a full tune-up to see if that corrects the problem. As part of that you should change all of your fuel filters. You should also assess the overall condition of the motor. When they heat up they tends to expand the cylinders which might lead to poor compression if they are excessively worn. Tired motors do not like to start consistently.
If your "tune-up" doesn't help then you will have to create the problem starting condition and then try to find the cause through a process of elimination. Many times a coil will fail when it gets hot. Check to see that you have spark. If not check your points and then suspect the coil. If your ignition has spark then you have to move on to fuel. To eliminate too little or too much fuel as a source then I would suggest you pull a spark plug after trying several attempts to start. If the plug is wet you have flooding. If it's dry then try to manually chokle the carb to see if it will start. If so then you need to concentrate on the fuel system.
You should invest in shop manuals if you plan on keeping the van. A wealth of knowledge in there. I hope something here helps.

I replaced the soleniod, the carb, battery wires, fuel filter, and battery. The enigne is not tired and worn out, it's very strong. when it happens today i am going to check the coil and see if it's flooding, i don't think it is flooding though beause there isn't a gas smell.
