Just found the source of my boost leak. After looking up past my EGT probe to i guess would be the up-pipe. Soot all over the heat shield. Happy that i located it but un-happy as to how to get to it. Is this tied together with a gasket? Is this a DIY project or give it to a pro? By the looks of things i guess this to be 3/8 bolt? Need 2ft. ext w/wobble. Maybe you guys can add some cents to this dilemna!
The "published" procedure for removing those pipes involves removing the turbo. I find the drivers side pipe isn't all that bad to change without removing the tubo, as long as you can apply some heat on the bolts going into the turbo. I pull the transmission if it needs the passenger side one.
i would much rather pull the turbo out (4 hours for a newbie) than dropping the transmission. can you get to the right one with just removing the turbo?
while you are at it, i would get some heat wrap and wrap the up pipes. i did my downpipe the last time it was down and i can imagine how much it dropped underhood temps especially near the firewall.
Yea we just did the up-pipe "donut" gaskets on my buddies truck last weekend - while we had the turbo and pedistal off for oil leak and wicked wheel install. it takes 2 people - and lots of ratchet extensions - but you CAN do it with just the turbo off
So what exactly is the fix for this? I have the same soot on my firewall. I didn't think it was that big a deal though. Where can I get the gaskets? I really don't remember ever seeing any on there last time I removed my turbo.
They are donut type gaskets between the flange and the turbo inlet pipe. They do cause a substantial lack of power when they leak badly. I always change the pipes too when I have a leak.
Yeah I guess I need to fix mine since I get a big cloud of black smoke in the cab when lugging the engine. I really haven't lost any boost though. Maybe I'll save a few years of my life. Anybody know where to get the gaskets for these pipse?
