my 85 BII has terrible brakes so i'm in the process of gettin the money together to replace them. took the BII to my local mechanic that i typically use and he said that it'd be around $600 to totally replace the brakes... don't really want to spend that much so have any of you done a brake replacement and how tough is it? the guy would come help me do it, but i'm on my own for parts etc... advice?
Brakes are actually rather simple if you take your time the front ones in my opinion are easier to do since they are disc. I agree with shiloh66 there are so many different brake components that not all of them would be bad at once. If you list your problem with them maybe some of the wonderful members can help you decide where to start looking and how to tell if the components are bad.
Don't go cheap on the rears, buy the hardware pack and get the new springs.
Autozone has pads with lifetime warranties, get them. Check out your front wheel bearings while you're in there. Get a good fluid flush too. I did mine for about $250 for parts. New calipers, rotors, pads, drums, shoes and hardware kits front and back. Looking for the stainless steel lines now.
