i am going to buy a 74 f 350 that has no engine but has a four speed I was looking for some input on a engine It had a 360? 390? in it I have a 390 in my shop but I was thinking 428 any suggestions?
If you have access to a 390, I guess I would just go with that. 390s are strong motors. If you are looking for pulling power, I suggest going with a 460. Is your truck a 4x4? If so, you will have to do some modifications for a 460. Another option is a 400. A good 400 is a solid motor also. As far as gas mileage is concerned, all those motors mentioned are hard on gas. Just all depends on what you are going to use the truck for. The bigger the motor, the better pulling power.
I have a 428 in my 75 ford and it has tons of power but like everyone says boy does it suck the gas. I average about 6-8 MPG on good days but it is loud and radical.
well its is a 2wd becuase they didnt have 4x4 F350's untill 79. i like the idea of diesel but if you dont want to do that, throw a 428 in there and you wont have any problems pulling anything.
Depends what you want to do with it, but if you already have the 390 (if it runs) you could stick it in the truck. It should bolt right in. Then drive it untill you decide what you really want.
the truck 9s 2 wheel drive, the 390 I have is pieces and missing the heads so I am open to sugestions, I thought about a diesel but a cummins insted of the international 6.9 or 7.3. this truck will only be used durring the summer for hauling hay or tractors to the pulls.
A 300-6 will work, but be a pig on gas trying to pull all the weight around. The 390 would most likely be the original motor and work well. A 428 would be a great upgrade. Of course a diesel would be another great upgrade, but is it worthwhile for a truck that is used maybe a couple dozen times a year?? There is also the "cool" factor of having a diesel in an older truck too. If $$ is a factor, 390 or a 428 if it can be found at a reasonable $$. Money not too much of a concern, diesel would be a good option. I did not mention the 460 becouse there really is no sense in going through the hassle of converting to a 385 series motor if you have/can get, a 428, that will most likely bolt right in.
If it had a 390 in it, any FE will fit. I'd put a 'built' 390 in. If you change from an FE, the bellhousing will have to be changed to match the engine.
