Last week I installed a second tranny cooler on my 99 PSD. My question is I noticed what looked like a very small cooler down near the bottom of the radiator? Was quite small maybe 5x7 and looked small for a engine oil cooler! Is there a rear end cooler on these puppies???
Just my thoughts since coolers can be all kinds of sizes depending on what you want them to do. I know only what I read on diesels, so beware what you believe from me.
1st, trace the cooler lines back to where they originate adn that will tell you for sure what they are for, ie engine, tranny, PS etc.
Most differentials do not have coolers. I am not sure they even come on anything as small as a F350.
Power steering coolers are somewhat rare but not unusual. The 5X7 seems a bit large, but I am used to coolers for cars. Most car PS coolers are about the size of a fat pack of cigarettes.
THe engine oil coolers are usually smaller than tranny coolers since you really don't want to cool an engine too much otherwise you have lots of fun with sludge, running rich etc.
The tranny coolers are anywhere from the size you mention to briefcase sized ones. A lot depends on whether they are tube and fin style which are large, or stacked plate or honeycomb style which are small for the same cooling.
You implied that there are two tranny coolers so I would guess the big one really is a tranny cooler. I Would guess the small one is either a large PS cooler or an engine oil cooler.
Guess I will just have to slide my big butt under the truck and trace em down!! My hunch is PS. What led to this whole thing was that I placed a Tekonsha 24000 lb Defender stacked plate trans cooler in series with the OEM cooler. After reading the horror stories on tranny failures I figuired for the $36 I got it for it was worth the trouble. Have a 30 Travel Trailer and I live here in the Mtns. I am gonna give her I the help I can.
