It's time to replace my stock tires on my 02 250, looking at going from stock 265-75-16 to a 285-75-16. My concern is that the (Cooper ATR), tires I'm looking at only come in an 8 ply in the 285 and I'm worried that the weight of engine alone may cause premature tire wear.
Open for suggestions or I'm sure some of you have went through this

After reading several positive posts here regarding B.F. Goodrich All Terrains, I replaced the stock 265's on my '02 with 295/75/16's I didn't see any posts regarding your concern and have been very pleased with the tires, but I'd also like to know what others think about this.
i believe there is only one company that makes a load range E 285 but don't worry about that. running the load range d will be fine on your truck. compare the actual weight capacity of the tires you have now and the atr's they will be within about 300 pounds or closer. I run 285/75r16 on my 95 psd 4x supercab long box and have no issue. the tires i run are nokian vativa which are the atr's twin as its the same design and made by cooper.

I have but BFG AT's on the last two trucks ive owned, best brand of tires out there. I had some 235/12.5/15's on a smaller truck that lasted 5 years or so.
Its important to get tires rotated and serviced, too, to keep them from wearing prematurely.
I've run D rated 295 bfg's that had a weight rating of ~3415 with no problems. I'm currently run D rated Goodyear MTR's that are rated at 3000lbs with no wear problems. I do run my tires at max pressure to get as good of mileage as possible though. That probably lets them wear a little longer.
I run 285/75/16s dueler at revos, on my 02 psd, before that it had bfg ats, and i noticed immediately better traction, wet and dry, and better snow performance, although it seems mud it wasnt in its best, but that may go with soupy mud with a heavy truck. I just bought a second set to put on there because they are just an all around better tire then the bfg, but thats my opinion, i am just now to replace them with 40k on them, and a really hard 40k, i drive to fast in general, and corner too fast and all that, these tires are defenitely quieter, offer better traction, and have comparable tread life to the bfg. I think they are a little more money then the bfgs but are defenitely worth every penny. on another note i actually benefited from approx 1 mpg increase in mileage. thats my humble oppinion... i never thought i would ever buy a bridgestone/firestone product, but i am very glad that i picked this tire as i will continue to put them on untill someone proves to me a better tire.
I have had several sets of BFG's in the past, and they are a very good tire,,No doubt. I went to the Coopers and saved about 200 bucks a set and they last just as long as the BFG's.I ran about 4 sets of the Cooper AT's and always got near 60,000 before replaced them. Currently i have the Disoverer ST,(they quit making the AT), Awesome tire everywhere but heavy rain and concrete. They have 55,000 at the moment and will make it another 5,000 easily. They are a little noisey though,,about like a BFG AT. Havent ran the Cooper ATR's, although i considered them and my dealer said they were not any good in the mud but were long lasting. I do spend some time in the woods so i need some mud traction. About another 2 months and i will have a new set of Cooper Discoverer ST's if that tells you anything.
And if it matters,, Cooper Tire is the last American owned tire company. I kinda like keeping as much of my money as possible here at home in America.
I've been running the Cooper Discoverer ATR tires for over a year now. I took off a good set of BFG AT's to do it. I've lived in zona (Arizona) and the BFG's are great sand tires (IMO). But not good rain, mud, snow tires. The Coopers run a lot better at highway speeds on my truck in the rain and decent in a few inches of snow. Of course only a good mud tire is any good in the mud. I like the Coopers. I don't think you'd be disapointed.
Dont worry about the ply rating. The 285 has more air volume so it has almost the same load capacity of the 265. I think there is only a 142 lbs per tire difference.
