Hello fellow van owners,
I've been checking this site out, but didn't have one, so never posted. That has since changed! Just bought a 93 Aerostar AWD 4.0. It's actually a handicap van (mother is disabled), so that's what my nick means, but the Aerostar sure seems like a Handy van, so my nick has 2 purposes! I've seen other forums, and this one seems like the friendliest by far. This is where i'll come if I have any problems or questions! Look forward to getting it. (bought off ebay, so still arranging shipping).
Thanks guys, i'm excited and cant wait to get it. Even better, it's in great shape, almost looks like brand new inside and out. It only has 47k miles on it, will be my first low mileage vehicle. My goal is to get it to 347k miles! lol It's got a raised roof (due to it being a handicap van). I like that better than a lowered floor, like a majority of handicap vans have. Either way though.
Hi i dont think you can go wrong with an aero with only 47k miles on it, mine has over 150k miles on it and still runs strong, it has had a few problems worst being the dreded heads cracking but in my case that was due to my son using it, it had a small water leak that he did not notice and he ran it untill it over heated this cracked the heads, both of them, i replaced them with junk yard heads about 50k miles ago and it has been ok ever since. But just keep an eye on your temp gauge and if it starts to shoot up stop it straight away or it will crack those heads. The 4.0 is famous for cracked heads by the way, but if you look after it and watch that gauge it should last for 200 or even 300k miles.
Cheers cbr900
Handi,
50k miles is the point where you need to change rear end, tranny ATF flush, transfer case ATF and front end 75w90 for long vehicle life.....
drain, flush and change antifreeze coolant every 2 years....since you don't know age of thermostat-put in a new one first change and every 25-50 miles therafter.....one time of old thermostat sticking shut = blow head gaskets and/or cracked heads.....
use only premium stainless steel such as Motorcraft or Stant 195d F only....
Thanks guys, I really look forward to it. I just gotta get it to Cali. lol It'll be worth it. 96_4wd, thanks for your advice, i probably won't be able to get to that sometime next year, don't have any money right now, put every penny into buying it and saving up for shipping now, among other bills. How much do you think that will run me? I'm not mechanically inclined, so i'd have to have a mechanic work on it. Although I will check and have the thermostat replaced right away, one way or another, cuz if that goes faulty, it won't wait til next year, and try to keep up on keeping those replaced, I think I can handle that repair myself since it's on top. Thanks again guys! )
Handi,
i'm an old slow fat dumb fart and i still work on my rigs....hate getting greasy and oily especially in hair and face but the personal satisfaction part of DIY repair makes up for the minor inconveniences
changing the front/rear end, engine, tranny and transfer case lubes/oils is easy.....get a Chilton's for the Aero and the forum members will talk you thru each item....search the Aero forum for each item before hand....all these have been done many times before and have concise write ups with lots of good tips....
will save you at least $50 to $100 on each item and you know it's done right and not by some guy trying to feed his kids on flat rate pay
you're right, if the cooling system has not been flushed and drained in last 2 years and original thermostat, do it first especially with the Calif heat....can kill an Aero faster than anything else...engine and tranny are ruined by overheating
