Pulling my trailer, about 10k loaded, sometimes the truck is blowing heavy smoke, I let off the throttle and get back on and the smoke is all but gone. This is very intermintent, some days it doesn't do it at all, some days it does it alot. Any ideas? Thanks,Chris
Sorry, been gone all day. There is 102,000 on the pump as far as I know. Had the timing set last year and it was off a bit.
I have a pyro and boost gauge. It runs about 6 lbs over atm. at 2000 rpm and max out at 9 lbs. At 70 mph pulling flat ground temp is about 900. Empty about 600.
Intermittent problems are always difficult to diagnose. Most likely an injector hanging up intermittently I would say seeing that the pump is fairly new.
Are you using Fuel Additives like the Stanadyne Formular, Diesel Kleen, Howie's, or Diesel Tone with each fill-up?
Have you changed your fuel filter recently?
Did you replace the injectors when you replaced the pump? It is always better to replace them at the same time as it could lead to intermittent problems if you don't.
How has your fuel quality been, have you had any water in fuel issues recently?
If you have not been keeping up on the fuel additives, I would start there. Run atleast two fill-ups with about a liter of additive in each tank, then go with the recommended dosage at each fill-upafter that. Dosage will depend on the make of additive you chose.
Thanks for the reply. There is 102,000 on the truck. I believe it is the original pump and injectors. Fuel filter has about 5K on it. I do use an additive in the fuel. I just ran a can of Sea Foam through and didn't see a change. Might have to get the pump/injectors checked out.
102,000 seems to low to be having pump or injector problems, but it is possible guess if somewhere along the line some water or dirt entered the injection system.
If the additive does not fix things than having the pump and injectors tested would be a good next step.
The only thing I would say is that a new pump and new injectors will run you somewhere between $600 to $800. So if you can install them yourself than why bother testing the old which will cost you a few hundred and all it does is confirm that what you have is most likely on the way out.
Just a thought if you are handy and feel like tackling the job yourself......
