What's the right pressure?

Here goes another stupid question that I can't find the answer to. On my 91 F150 2 wheel drive, what's the correct pressure when running 31 X 10.50 tires? Someone told me to run them about 45 psi so I did, but it gets no traction on wet pavement. I can come up the hill by my house but I'm fishtailing like crazy.I was going to let some out, but I'm afraid that will cause them to wear out too quick or ruin the gas mileage. Thanks
Dave

The right pressure is whatever gives you best traction with the load your carrying, without causing excessive tire wear or unstable handling. Traction is directly affected by the tire type, rubber compound and condition, so in general off road mudders suck badly on wet pavement where a street tire has no problem. I had the same issue with Uniroyal Lareado in that size on my regular cab, and it got worse the older the tires got. It's because the back of these trucks is very light.. my extended cab was not nearly as bad with the exact same tires installed. I ran as low as 25lbs in the back, with 35lbs in front when not carrying a load, and pumped up when necessary. A better solution is to get rid of the tires you have now, and search for something with a high wet traction rating.. maybe something along te lines of e Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo.

I run 35psi in my 31-10.50R15 Michelin LTX M&S on my 1993 F150 4x4. Gives the best combination of traction, wear & handling.
