Getting ready to pull the motor this weekend and am interested in finding out the torque specs for the 400. Any books/places that I can find ALL the information would be great! Thanks, Rick
I have a Haynes manual for 73-79 pickups and Broncos that list general torque specs and specific 400 specs where they differ. This book deals with 240,300,302,351W,351M,400,360,390,460. I don't know if the 400 was out yet in 72. This is kind of a catch all book but does have a lot of specific torque spec info. I prefer using my HP Books How to Rebuild.... I have one for smallblocks and one for FE's. I bet they have one for Cleveland/Modified family. You can probably find the torque specs you need in the Haynes manual. At least for 77-79 400's.
In Pat Ganahl's book "Ford High Performance", he lists the 400's HP as 260 in 1971 and 172 in 1972. He also lists the torque as 400 in '71 and 298 in '72. This gives you a good comparison in the "net" vs. "gross" ratings.
The biggest reason for the difference in h.p. & torque #'s between '71 &'72 is that in '71 Ford used flat top pistons in the 400. But in '72 they went to dished pistons . Just thought you might like to know .
From one of my old Chilton books, here's some of the torque specs you might need: heads/95-105; rods/40-45; mains/half in. by 13 bolt 95-105, three eights by 16 bolt 35-45; flywheel/75-85; intake/21-25; exhaust/12-16 ft lbs. These apply to the 351C/400 from 72.Hope this helps.
