Hi all, what should the oil pressure be when starting up and at idle (in P) in a newly rebuilt 400? Also, as it breaks in what types of oil pressures should I be looking for? Thanks, Rick
Rick, I would say, it kind-of depends on what you are running for an oil pump. I just got my freshly built 400 running last week. I watched the oil pressure very closely (of course) so I can tell you what I was getting. I'm running a melling high volume pump. When I first cranked it, I was seeing about 65-70lbs, and it didnt change too much when it started (about 75lbs). When it heated up to temp, it came down to about 50lbs at an idle (650rpms). In gear it drops a little lower, somewhere around 35lbs. I would expect a stock pump would be a little bit less, but similar. Hope this helps!! good luck!!
I just recently changed the rod bearings, and went with an HD oil pump also, I dont have an exact PSI, but my gauge was almost 4/5 at idle,3/4 warm, and at least 1/2 in gear at operating temp, the bearings have about 3K and no real major drop in PSI...
newly built, I would expect at least halfway on the gauge at operating temp , idling....
Thanks all...I am getting around 80 psi at startup and around 40-50 psi onced warmed up and in drive.
The motor only has 50 miles on it so far...I expect the numbers to drop...Thanks, Rick
