My dad has a 1997 ford F-250 7.3l powerstroke diesel that we have been trying to figure out what is wrong with it and now that we know it needs injectors, but what want to do is either put injectors in the truck and sell it or put cummins 12valve motor in that is not eletronic. How hard will to be to change over to the the cummins from a powerstroke what is the things you have to do to change to a cummins thanks.

I said I was going to replace injectors in it and see if it will run or not.Powerstroke have alot of money involve in them thought I would ask what was involve in changing to a cheaper cummins injectors for cummins $500 Set,for powerstroke $1800.You tell me whats better a money pit powerstroke or a cheaper and better cummins. When I get the injectors in the truck does anyone want to buy it?It is a Ford 1997 F-250 powerstroke 7.3L 5speed extcab with a cannonball haybed with 265,000 miles when it is run it will be worth $8500-$9000 with a cannonball bed.So anyone that needs one let me know.Talk to you later.
yeah I would agree with your idea to go to the cummins motor as you are able to get more power out of them for alot less money than a powerstroke as I'm also planning on swapping to the cummins in the next year or two. you can check out fordcummins.com for some info on swapping to a cummins engine.
I hope no one will crucify me for this opinion......but the guy has a very good point..........I love my OBS 1997 crew cab Ford.........but I can honestly say that it has very little power compared to my Cummins
I haven't had any problems with it yet, but I read on this forum about alot of people working on the powerstroke for CPS, IDM, injectors, fuel pumps, vlave cover wiring harness, etc......
I have owned 6 different cummins and put an average of 280K miles on each of them...........total repair work: 1 water pump
1 belt tensioner
Anyway, I love my Ford truck, but I really love the old 1989 thru 1997 manual Cummins....................
Not trying to start an argument, just wanted to let the guy know he has a good ideal and I too may do an engine swap next year and it isn't no big deal with a manual cummins............hardest part is finding one in good shape that is for sale
now heres a good topic to talk on, ur talking about 1800 for injectors get stage 1 injectors from beans ull be better off as for hp out of the powerstroke verses cummins rather have the stroker though, if u can find a cummins in good shape, if u have a 5 spd ur parts from fordcummins is going to cost u another 1500 though, then if u do any kinds of mods to it then its going to cost u just as much either way, i have a buddy that has a 12V cummins in a 93 ford 3/4 converted to 1 ton and 4wd, has a 12V in it who knows the miles, has a bigger turbo on it, cost him a pretty good chunk of money, and with the bigger turbo, he needs a clutch and pressure plate now too, it will run yes but just think if u dont get all the adapters for the cummins to go in ur ford such as the A/C adapter alone is about 200 bucks though, in my opinion yes the cummins has power but so does the powerstroke too, ford had the 7.3 powerstroke for 9 years same as dodge had the 12V though but u see at least ford still offered the 7.3 when dodge went to the junk 24V though, just my input but if i was u id keep the powerstroke though, look at it this way more i hear of things from friends with the 12V cummins in the long run they pay more for parts then us with powerstrokes though, but like i said thats just my input but im keepin my stroker though dont want a 12V though

Good Luck
k dodge offered the manual cummins from 89 to 98.5 not 97, first part of 98 u could still get the 12V later part was the 24V just clearin that up too
In the 90's, Ford and Dodge were battling for top horsepower and torque. One year it was Dodge then Ford and then Ford went with the DI Turbo Diesel. So depending on the year of the 12v you may or may not get more power and spend the time and money trying. IMO upgrade the Ford. It will perform just as good or better than the 12v. My 95 has 166,000 miles on it and I have only replaced the water pump and the cps. Dodge has nothing on me on this point.
