Some info on MPG

I'd like to tell you guys that I'm very happy with the economy of my 2002 2x4 x/cab 4.2L F150. I recently when 405 miles on a full tank of gas 22gal, that's like about 18.5 MPG, 99% of it city driving. I notice good results once I installed the soft bed cover about 3mpg increased I also change the EGR and DPFE valve, spark plugs and wires, fuel and air filter. I need to replace both O2 sensors bank1 and bank2 I expect even better MPG after that; I'm after the 20MPG average, but will see.
I have to say that I don't drive the truck hard I usually keep my shift point below 2000 RPM's, I only used the A/C if is raining or if I'm on the Xpressway and I don't tow anything yet, although I'll be towwing my 21' boat soon, so I'll let you know more on that soon. The truck has 107.050 miles on it right now I bought used just a month ago. Well until next time.

Be happy. I'm lucky to get 275 out of a tank.

I have started to change my ways I drive in the city. I try to keep it under 1700 rpms. I had to travel to a parade Sun. about 155 miles round trip and used about a quarter tank. filled up on the way there. But by my estimating I got about 19-21mpg while cruising at 65 w/ air on.

2000 7700 S/C 4x4 - Predator 87 octane tune with tweaks, custom CAI with Air Hog filter, 90mm Lightning MAF, BBK 75mm TB, Powerdyne spacer, BBK underdrive pulleys, Flex-a-lite electric fan, Bassani H-D in front of tire exhaust (removed y-pipe for this)....Edelbrock headers waiting in the wings. Keep in mind many of these mods are going on with a supercharger in mind...

Last 600+ mile trip had 700lbs worth of passengers and another 1000lbs worth of gear, 5500lb scale weight = me, truck w/canopy and full tank of gas) and all the mods. Drove through a mountain pass both ways, elevation gain was 3600ft, average speed was 72mph. From sea level to an average elevation of 2800 ft. 15.28mpg was the best, 15.15mpg was the worst.

Previously I drove the truck on a 300 mile round trip with 200lbs in passengers and no payload. The truck average 17mpg with highway and back country driving, this was before the exhaust, pulleys, and fan.

Normally I get 13.5-14.25mpg with a rough 50/50 mix of city/hwy - and it doesn't seem to change much no matter what modification I have installed.

I have also towed a 3500lb car/trailer combo and have gotten 13.5mpg at 60mph average. A 6000lb travel trailer with a 45mph average gives me about 10mpg.

Just a note - The O2 sensors should only be changed after you ensure all the other upstream sensors are working correctly... they are not a dynamic sensor and only read what the rest of the sensor package is outputting to them (fuel and air)... if the upstream sensors (fuel and air) aren't working correctly or if you have an unmetered air leak, you can get the lean codes... so changing them doesn't do a thing but waste your money in most cases.

-Kerry

Geez guys I wish I was getting the mpg's that you guys are getting. I have a 2003 4x4 5.4l and I average 12.5-13 50/50 highway and city. And I try to keep the shift points under 2000 rpm and a cat-back. CAI and electric fan coming soon though.

If you guys would, please list your gear ratio with your mileages. My '95 5.0L 4R70W 3.31 getting 12 MPG is on it's way out the door. I'm going to find a '97 - '03 so I'm really paying attention to these MPG post in your forum.
Thanks!
