Unhappy Big bang, any help?

I was climbing a hill in Canada today in Tow/Haul when all of a sudden I heard a big bang from what seemed like the engine compartment. Checked it out, nothing evident. Started going up the hill again and had no power. The truck was able to pull the hill, only very slowly with no power. I went to the nearest trailer park and started looking for a Ford dealer. I think maybe the torque converter bit the big one. The truck is an '03 6.0L with 75k miles. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

torque convertor going out would cause it to rev high and not go anywhere, big bang and no power first place I would look is your intercooler pipe boots, you might have split one or blown it off which would cause a no boost no power situation.

Have you had the recall for the CAC tubes. Some times these blow off and cause a loud bang and even hit the under side of the hood in come cases. Then it sounds really loud and no power.

Wow. I am sitting in a hotel room right now waiting for a local small town dealer to "check out" my 05 F350 CC that took a similar dump at speed 600 miles from home pulling a loaded toy hauler last saturday. No boost. A quick look revealed no obvious boot problem. Get this, 36140 miles so absolutely no Ford roadside assistance. AAA to the rescue (at least for the tow). I forgot to hook up the egr before it went to dealer oh well. I DID remove the SC tune(tow safe mode) immediately. Any suggestions on getting a dealer to make this a priority?

Thanks for the input. I'm taking it in this morning for diagnostic. Will advise on the findings.

Lightbulb Listen for the whistle before the bang

I was coming into West Virginia on Sunday pulling a 34' 5th Wheel with my 04 6.0 Super Duty (18,869 miles), climbing the last mountain before coming into Princeton WV. when the big bang hit me as well. There was no power, black smoke and some scared girls in the back. As it turned out, there were no hoses loose but whle at idle, you could hear a whistling from the from of the grill. The whistling was from the innercooler for the turbo charger. It had apparently blew the gasket. The funny thing about this was we has heard a slight whistle in the front of the truck the day before but could not locate it. But after it blew there were no problem in locating it.

Ford's emergency assistance tried for an hour to find someone to tow the truck and could not find anyone. So I had to call a tow truck from Parkersburg ( 170 miles away ) for the truck and a truck equipped with a 5th wheel from Elizabeth WV ( 180 miles away ) to get my family home safely.

What a day and one I don't wish for anyone so listen for the whistle before it finally blows.

From the Turbo, there is a 2 1/2 blue Neoprene coupler hose that connects the Hot charge air via the metal 3" tube wrapped in the heat blanket with Zip ties. It connects to the inlet of the Intercooler via a blue boot. From the same spot on the other side of the intercooler and the other side of the fan shroud is the exit of the cool air side that dumps into the intake manifold via another 3" Blue?, 3" metal tube, and again a 3" black neoprene coupler that dumps into the intake elbow into the intake manifold. Each coupler has 2 clamps. Those are what usually comes loose.

Big bang

RuebenG, the arrow indicates where the connection is which is at this location under the intercooler shroud. The tech has said that intercooler has to be replaced. The connection is square, plastic on the left, aluminum (intercooler) on the right. It is still considered under warranty, so I had to pay $100 Canadian for the deductible.

Thanks again everybody for valued input...Great site!

This is yet another post I don't understand. Although I feel bad for anyone that gets stranded (especially way away from home pulling a trailer) I am continually baffled by how most people think they can alter the mechanical workings of a warrantied product and expect no repercussions.

Here is a truck with a customer-disabled part on the engine (EGR) and has been running with more power than Ford manufactured the truck with. This is clearly setting ones self up for failure and a very real potential for warranty denial/blacklisting the truck in Oasis.

This is a classic example of how you can never plan for every possibility i.e. plan on a failure in your driveway where you can disconnect the batteries and pull your mods off the truck before it gets towed to a dealer. This guy is at the mercy of some dealer he doesn't know from Adam...not a good position to be in. Something to think about for you guys reading this thread and are currently thinking about modding your truck for power.

To me there's no engine mod out there that is worth the potential of losing my warranty. If I need more power I'll have to save up and buy a medium duty truck to do the job right or just live with climbing the hill a few mph slower then I would with a power mod.

All has turned out ok. The dealer had a turbo in stock and got me going relatively quick. As far as the egr goes I have read all the posts on here that I could and it seems that the turbo failures are not directly related to wether or not the egr is hooked up. I really do blame myself for not running an egt gauge though. I thought I would be safe running in the tow safe mode and the truck in the tow-haul mode. I have made this trip three times before with no problem. I just will not know if excess heat was a problem until I get the gauge installed. Until then I am running with the stock tune to be safe.

Just a note: the tech that did the replacement showed me the turbo and it was the exhaust side that failed with one vane broken off and the very tips of all the others were broken or slightly bent over, thus no boost. None actually looked melted. It appears that the one that came off did the damage to the rest. I am open to any opinions as to what may have caused this. The truck did just shift down and was really spinning but it only lasted a few seconds before letting go.
