I just purchased a 1968 Ford Pickup with a 6 cylinder (300) engine. I took off what seemed to be the air filter but it looked different. When I unscrewed the top wingnut I pulled the cover off and found what I believe to be oil on the bottom plate surrounding the carb. The filter looks like it is metal like a rough SOS pad. Please give me any information on what is going on. I hope I was not taken for a ride on this pickup. You can email me at Billy0206(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
It is what is called an oil bath filter. To service it all you do is clean the filter and change the oil. IT was used fairly often on earlier trucks and works pretty good.
You can replace it with a regular air filter if you so desire. Go to the junkyard and find an inline 6 cyl, 300/240 doesnt matter which, and get the air filter housing off of it. It is a direct swap.

If you do decide to opt for a conventional paper element housing don't "throw" that oil bath air filter out. I would be interested in obtaining it assuming it is in good condition and not all rusty. Let me know.
