Well it has finally hit me...the mod bug that is. I want to upgrade the camshaft in my truck strictly for power. It is a 1996 5.0L so it is MAF, can you guys tell me what you think is the best camshaft for my truck. A rough idle is not a big concern to me as long as it is not too rough. Also are there any related things I should change associated to the camshaft? And at this point a camshaft change is beyond my skills can you tell me how long to should to change it a quailty shop to do? I have one in mind that several family members go to, I just want to make sure there as good as my uncle thinks.
heads and timing chain, also the intake, headers and exhust. Oh and the roller cam wont be to ruff of an idle. I have a 512 / 512 and its real smooooooooth!
Yeah.. the '96 has a factory roller cam, but damned if I can find any information on it. I somehow suspect it's not as healthy as the mustang cam.. but who knows. Maybe somebody else will chime in with real specs. Put a new timing chain and gears in if you do this, and adding long tube headers and a decent 2.5" single exhaust will help. DO NOT put dual 2.5" exhaust on a 5.0 until you have heads, cam and a blower added.. this motor just doesn't need it and all you'll do is kill your low rpm torque. Also note that you are very likely limited to less than .450" lift at the valve due to the flat top pistons in these motors.
You need to remove the upper and lower intake to change the cam, plus the rad, water pump and timing cover. It's no small job so labor could cost you 3-4 times what the cam is worth, depending upon what rate the garage charges.
