Temporary truck needs A/C help

First, let me say that I only need this truck to get me through this summer while I search for a new Super Duty to buy, so longevity of the compressor was not a concern when I started this project.

I did the $30 walmart conversion from R12 to R134a, and the truck's system was evacuated of any old R12. Wwhen recharging the system with the new refrigerant, I cannot get the system to suck in the new R134a. The compressor is quick-cycling (every 3-4 seconds), so I jumpered the switch to force it to run while I tried to fill it. The new can is not getting any emptier or cold. The sucky gauge is reading 25psi when the compressor is on, 40psi when it is not. What would be the next step to having cheap A/C for 2 months?

Thanks-
Chris

unless you pull a vacuum in the system, it will not take any refrigerant.

I agree. Did you start with a vacuum in the system? If not, that problem one. Another way to force more refrigerant in is to get a bucket of the hottest water you can and put the can in it while filling the system. That will increase the pressure in the can. If it's not taking anymore from that can then the can must have 25 psi in it too. Don't look for very good cooling with the conversion.
