So I have the same problem as most.
Speedometer does not work, tach does, hard shifting, (safe mode?)
ABS light on. Had a new ABS unit put in 2 years ago if that makes any difference.
I pulled the whole cluster and I am planning on taking it to a speedo place to have it checked.
1st Q. Is the mileage stored in the cluster or in the PSOM?
2nd Q. Is the PSOM the little black box on the right side behind the glove box with the cable plugged into it?
3rd Q. Should I pull this also, and can the speedo shop test it?
4th Q. If the speedo cluster turns out to be fine, should, can I replace the PSOM?
I did replace the speed sensor on the rear axle, no change.
I have put of taking it to the shop for a year as I have 4 other means of transportation and don't want to be gouged by the dealer.
When I called and asked about what it would cost to replace the cluster, I was told that the new one would have to be programed with my mileage and then sent to the shop at a cost of $750!
That goes to reason to me that the mileage is stored in the cluster, is that right?
Sorry, my bad, im new at this and not a tech.
Then what is the VSS? the black box behind the glovebox?
I don't know all the initials stand for.
So, is the mileage stored in the cluster?
The VSS is in the rear axle. It reads the signal off the tone ring and tells the computer how fast the vehicle is going. It's used for the speedometer and the tranny. Since your tranny is shifting funny, you might want to check the wiring to the VSS.

Is there a way to meter this wire to the Variable Speed Sensor, as opposed to just looking at it?
wow, thanks for all the help.
Maybe someone could put up a link to a forum where I COULD find some answers.
YES, I did do a search on this one, but I don't know what all the acronyms mean.
Guess im to green for this site.
