Hello all,
I am considering the purchase of a 1972 F250 camper special. The 390ci engine is in need of a rebuild which I would not want to do at this time. I have a 72 4v 351c from a Grand Torino Sport that I would like to swap in. What if any problems might I encounter if I attempted this swap(i.e.engine mounts, coolant hook-ups,etc.). I would appreciate any feedback anybody might have.
Both engines have C6 transmissions.
Also does anybody know if the 400ci cleveland was installed in 72 pickups.
depending on what your doing with it..a 351c isn't the ideal truck engine. a 351M i don't believe was used till mid to late 70's....dont even bother with one of those. With the 351C youll have to change the tranny as well with the engine...different bolt patterns
Personally i'd redo the 390..but i am kinda partial to them....
MY '69 HAD THE 360 FROM THE FACTORY, BUT THE 360 WAS SWAPPED FOR A '72 351C-4V. THE 351C HAS BEEN SWAPPED FOR A MORE DRIVER FRIENDLY 351W. THE FE PERCHES WERE USED IN BOTH SWAPS AND ACCORDING TO THE GUY THAT SWAPPED THE 360 TO 351C, IT WAS PRETTY MUCH A CUT AND DRY SIMPLE SWAP.THE 351W ALSO WENT RIGHT IN WITH NO PROBLEMS. THE 351C-4V IS A HIGH REV MOTOR vs.THE 390 LOW RPM HIGH TORQUE TOWING MOTOR. IF YOU WANT TO RACE IT, GO WITH THE 351C BUT FOR CRUISING OR TOWING I'D STICK WITH THE 390 ANYDAY!! BUT I'TS YOUR TRUCK SO USE THE MOTOR YOU WANT TO USE.
I agree that a 351c is just not suited for a truck power plant. While it made a great high reving car engine (with poor everyday street characteristics) you would be much better off with the 351w. Besides, there are a number of Mustangers who really would like that 351c. Hey, it hasn't been made for some 25 years.
I had a 1974 half ton 4 by 4 with a NP435 4 spd (granny low) and 4.11 gears. It came with a 240 inch six and ended up with a 351C 4bbl with small chamber heads (about 300 HP). It was a ball to drive. The only reason I sold it was a 2nd child made it to small since it only seats 3.
