Well, with a Falcon, if the radiator has been relocated, and the engine almost touches the firewall and radiator support, you have a 240 or 300-6. Other than that, it is either a 200 or 250 small six.
200 was the biggest six put in american/canadian falcons, with most getting the 170.
The 240 was only used in galaxies for a couple years (64-65 I think)
the easiest way to tell at a glance is, the 240/300 six
has a valve cover with 6 large evenly spaced bulges on the passenger side.
The 144/170/200 (and even the 250 but its a motor thats alot different from the other small sixes) has a valve cover that has several bulges on the sides of the valve cover.

thanks for all your replies i now beleive it is the 250ci 6 my rego papers are wrong.
Here in australia they still use a varient of the old 250 but these days its called the 4.0l dohc 24 valves mpi with or with out turbo
and prior it dropped down to 3.9l ohc 12valves mpi this was in 1988
and prior to that we had alloy head crossflow 2bl carburated or efi 1983 this replaced cast iron crossflow 1bl carb 1976
prior to that we ran the 250 with inlet manifold cast as one peice to the head or the 2v with separate in let manifold
