I had a 460 short block rebuilt not sure on the but it is 1973 to 1978 and the lifters they sent with it ( in a box not the engine dont no why ) dont fit in the bores they are a hair to big. they do how ever fit a 1979 460 block that i have but its no good. i just want to no if pre 1979 have diferent lifters or what the deal is cause im kinda stuck
as far as i know they're the same.see if you can get in there with some calipers and check the hole dia and then measure the lifter.they should be pretty close .
you may want to call comp or a good machine shop that knows fords.that sounds really weird.checked summit and they don't list a break by year, they're all the same.make sure theres no lip at the top of the lifter bore that you are measuring.if there is that blocks probably an anchor.
i think the block is ok it was just rebuilt by a good machine shop, never had a prob with them so i'm going to contact them monday and see what the deal is and have them fix it
the lifters are the same diameter for any year of the 385 series engine, and infact are the same for the windsors and clevelands and some of the 6 cylinders,(240 and 300) also they use the same lifters, the FE, the V6s and the 2.3 4cyl use different lifters. and all but the 2.3L use the same diameter which should be .874"
I have replaced a lot of lifters and never had this problem. Be sure and post when you find out what is going on. I am sure that a lot of guys like me would like to know whats going on.
i called the machine shop that rebuilt for me and they said that there one machine sometimes nicks the lifter bores and they said just tap them in with a rubber mallat but i didnt like that so i just ran some very fine sand paper though them and they slid right in

I think I would be a little nervous having work done by a machine shop that as a machine that sometimes nicks and they haven't done anything about correcting the problem. What if it nicks something more critical?
